I thought someone was calling me a hooker, but the term was 'hookah.' Since when did hookah become the next Mary Jane, and what exactly IS it? My boyfriend goes to a hookah bar every now and then, and I don't exactly think it's dangerous, but does it have any harmful health effects? I need substantial facts to back up what I tell him besides "I don't want you to go."

from my experiene, hookah is a middle eastern tool used to smoke different substances. it just looks like a vase with thin hoses attached with mouthpieces at the end. usually it is used to smoke flavored tobacco, which provides a slight buzz but doesnt get you high. its not like smoking weed or anything, and youre able to drive after and be completely coherent...i know that doesnt exactly defend your desire to tell your boyfriend to refrain from smoking hookah, but it really depends on what he's smoking out of the hookah. if he goes to hookah bars, he's smoking flavored tobacco; hookah bars have menus much like a restaurant from which you order your choice flavor and you and your party smoke out of it together. it is tobacco, so it is harmful, but it isn't a narcotic like you might think.

Back in the late 60's early 70's a lot of the bongs were originally made of green bamboo with a hole drilled at the bottom and another smaller piece of green bamboo was shoved into the hole. The top of the small piece of bamboo was split to provide a place to put your herb. Then using the same principal as a hookah, you fired her up and smoked your herb. What only a few people like myself knew was that you could have put dirt into the makeshift bowl and gotten wasted. Burning green bamboo is the strongest natural hallucinogenic in the world. After that was 'discovered' bongs were made from dried bamboo and the bowl was made of some other materials. Hookahs have been around for thousands of years throughout the Middle East and India.

A hookah is a pipe with more than one nozzle for smoking. A hookah bowl can be filled with your favorite smoking product, and enjoyed by several people at one time. Try googling it. There's hookah info everywhere.
