I think people missing a sense tend to pay more attention to what they find on their other senses and compensate somewhat that way. I don't think the other senses actually get stronger, just more important.

Their other senses don't "get stronger"...they are just more aware of them. Our brain can only handle so much sensory stimulus before it starts to ignore background stuff and just pay attention to what is new (and therefore, potentially "dangerous" if you think of it in an evolutionary way.) It's like if I tapped you on the shoulder non-stop for an hour, you'd just get used to it and probably not feel it anymore.
When someone loses a sense, the brain can analyze more sensory input from other senses because it doesn't have to focus on that lost sense anymore. So it appears that the others senses get "stronger"

Yes. It's because the other senses have to work overtime to make up for the loss of one. e.g. if you lose your sight, your hearing would become much better to compensate and probably your smell as well.

Nature *always* compensates. For instance, if you find someone with one leg shorter, invariably the other leg will be longer to compensate.

Yes, it is true. People who are deaf or blind have better other senses than normal people.
