Some stones work best with oil, others with water or spit.
But once you start using oil you will have to use oil all the time.
Spit is the best for many stones, just wash them with water after use.

Some stones can be used dry too, but unless you are sure water or spit are preferred.

If its stainless steel, it wont hold an edge. Toss it!
Spring steel is best, or a material composition that meets your demands (Usage)
If the blade is fairly dull, file it first.
Honing is an art. Most immportant to keep blade at a uniform angle. Use an oil made for this purpose. There are different grits of stone. Start with Course. Graduate to Fine after it will cut paper. When you can shave with it, it will be sharp!
