There are actually two full length doors that have been sitting in the basement of our house for many years. It is a grimey kind of dirt--but now that I have them mounted where they originally were--they need a good cleaning!

Try Sugar soap as well, but be careful of the fumes, but its very good at getting rid of long term grime and dirt.
Also Bicarb of soda will do the trick use a toothbrush to get into the corners, and as said before vinegar to.

Vinegar will work well. Use a cloth or sponge that you don't mind discarding after use. You will pick up some of the lead while cleaning. You do not want to use the cloth on anything you will be eating from. Wear rubber gloves.
