dealing with bad a** kids

2007-09-22 03:12:47 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 1

I hated being the cop, but the paper work, not grading papers, but all the things that have to be done for all the governmental bodies that think that one more standardized test will help the kids learn is a pain. Reading and hearing everybody criticize what you do is not encouraging at all, especially when few if any of these critics could last ten minutes in a high school classroom. And finally, pay day. Teachers just starting out where I live will never be able to put a down payment on a house. One nearby district even bought an apartment house to rent places to young teachers, a teacher's ghetto.

But, remember, those who can teach. Those who can't do something less significant.

Oh, how I wish I had the advantage of having the internet when I was in college; I would have steered clear of teaching so much sooner.

Okay, this is a little sociology to explain the misery of today's teacher.... Parents do not raise their children anymore. They are too busy working or being self-involved to raise their kids. They do not discipline their children. Their children do not have respect for authority. Then, they come to school. Today's public school teacher is faced with the impossible job of training up kids who do not know discipline, do not respect authority, and also have a gammet of health issues (ADHD, Autism, etc.). Often, a parent sides with their kid over the teacher. Administrators are often not allowed corporal punishment. In short, the inmates run the asylum.

As a teacher, you are "on" all day, and are expected to be perfect.

At the end of the day, you cannot just turn off your light and computer and leave your work till tomorrow. You're exhausted, and then have to grade papers, go to meetings, call parents, and plan your lessons.

Teaching is such a lonely job. You have to perform by instructing/making your students learn, you have to please your administrators, and your kids' parents. I.e., you have to be perfect!!!!

You will have students that dislike you no matter what.

The pay is awful.

THERE ARE NO JOBS to be found. For every 150 resumes I sent out, I got ZERO calls. I had excellent grades, and fantastic recommendations. Generally, you have to sub or know someone on a school board to be seriously considered. My husband is a surgical PA. He sent out 4 resumes after he graduated and got 3 calls back, and two job offers.

I wish I had not wasted my time with it. I love the corporate world, and became a buyer for a developer. I love being able to leave my work at my desk until I come back the next day.

Parents are first followed by children. Then the pay! A 4 year degree and you make less then most apprentice plumbers or day laborers. That's not right.
