Hmmm, that's a good question, especially in this day of cell phones and mega communication. Say you lost track of time. Say you got a flat tire (make sure you dirty up your hands for when you helped change the flat). Say anything, but the truth is best.
As a parent now, I realize that my parents just wanted me home by a certain time for my safetly, and to keep me out of trouble. Now, I appreciate it...

Honey, I hit a dog on the way home. Some kids were standing on the sidewalk and saw the accident. It turned out it was their dog. The kids went inside and got their mom while I waited with the injured dog. Their mom didn't have a car, so I took her and her kids and the dog to the vets office. Of course, I felt obliged to stay with them to see if the dog would be ok. When the vet finished stitching up the dog, they needed a ride home, of course. So I took them home. It was the least I couldl do for running over their dog.
