White Squall!!!
This movie mixed with the fear of the vast ocean and the connection you feel with the characters made this a very scary movie indeed. I liked it a great deal but could never watch it again. To me it was horrifying!!!!

As a child, mid-60's, it was "The Mummy" (1959 Hammer Studios version.) The sound of his dragging foot followed me to my bedroom at night after lights out as I lay there horrified!
As a young teen, early 70's, it was "Jaws." I sat way too close in the theatre for that one! I was even afraid to take a shower before bedtime that same nite because of the sound of the running water! Gosh, how frightening for the time!
As an older teen, latter 70's, definitely "The Exorcist." Finally saw a midnight screening inside a college auditorium. EVIL.
I held up, but a macho football guy behind me kept squirming and clearing his throat alot and breathing oddly and finally jumped-up and quickly left. I'm glad I wasn't permitted to see this movie when I was a young teen, because it probably would've done permanent damage to my psyche.
In the 80's, it was "The Shining." This was a brilliant, intense, haunting study of madness and "good versus evil." That scene in the ballroom men's room where the waiter has a conversation with Nicholson while cleaning off the spill is CAPTIVATING. Geez, man!!
Later on, "Aliens." Many edge-of your-seat scenes. The little girl: "They mostly come out at night, mostly." Makes me cry.
The panicky guy: "Game over, dudes! Game over!" Makes me laugh now, but then I felt it captured the moment.
Finally, "Titanic." Great, true-to-life story, as told through a survivor's eyes is a modern-day classic. It has everything a classic should have, and all the ingredients come together in one of the scariest climaxes on film.
What's next?

I don't like/watch scary movies so the scariest one I've seen (which probably isn't that scary to most) is Urban Legend...I thought Final Destination was pretty scary too

I'm a huge horror movie fan having watched hundreds of them. What's scariest changes as I get older (films on global warming now freak me out!), but here goes:
1) Suspiria (Dario Argento film, Italian director, but American actors and in english)
freaky freaky movie. defies all the logic of horror films (who can be killed, how, and in what order). vicious in its attacks, merciless.
2) Let's Scare Jessica to Death (70s film - worth finding!!)
Kept me on the edge of my seat. No hope in this one. Good guys lose!
3) Dead & Buried
nothing like this one. totally original and gave me nightmares for weeks
4) Black Christmas
Creepiest psycho killer. Guy covers himself in clear plastic and hides in attics. Weird stuff. He's totally insane. I needed a shower after watching it because I felt so icky.
5) Phenomenon (Dario Argento again, his masterpiece - not the John Travolta film!)
if you like the first couple Halloweens & Friday the 13ths, check this one out. It has it all, including a knife wielding chimp!
6) The Thing (Kurt Russell one from 80s still holds up today)
7) Halloween (everyone knows this one)
8) Exorcist (everyone knows it)

The Asian version of "The Grudge" movie..What particularly made it more scary was I watched it during Halloween and a friend called to report that another friend got involved in a minor car accident. If you saw the movie, there's this scary-looking kid. According to my friend who got involved in the accident, when she was at the hospital, the bystanders who witnessed the accident asked her where was the child sitting on her lap while she was driving...But there was no child actually in her car, just her and her mom...

I scare easily, especially at true stories that are horrific. The two that scared me the most are "The Texas Chainsaw Masacre" and "The Amityville Horror." I definitely can't watch these alone!

Texas Chainsaw Massacre --only because it's based on a true story. It's really more horrific to think that people could actually do those things.
