Chips in the hot water means there is debris in the water heater. On the bottom of the water heater is a faucet handle. Attach a hose and runit to a floor drain. Now open the faucet and watch the discharge until it runs clean. Problem solved. Water heaters are notorious for lime deposits. If you checked the owners manual, it will state that the heater should be drained a little annually to remove some of the loose lime deposits that collect in the bottom of most water heaters. The LL is right to have you run the water at the faucets to clear the lines, but it must start with the water heater. If this has been neglected for a long time, a new water heater may be called for.

I'm no expert, but I can guess pretty good! I would say the inside of the hot water heater is rusted. IF that is so, replacing the hot water heater will fix it! :D BUT... do what the other people said first... run the hot water, even run it all out, and see if it clears up.
If you DO replace it, be sure to get one big enuff! I always buy the BEST 50 gallon hot water heater I can get! :D

Document the talks with your landlord. Have your water tested, save a jar of the floaters and show him. I would worry if the water were safe to drink. If it didn't clear up after a week or two I'd talk to the LL on a regular basis with your concerns.
Good Luck

The only way to get rid of it is to replace all the water lines. You should be drinking bottled water and also cooking with it.We bought a house once and had the same problem. We did have to replace all the water lines. It won't hurt you to bathe in it.

tell your lanlord you are going to check with the health dept. in your city to see if the water quality is ok. I bet he changes the water heater. If he doesn't then actually call them.
