Of course not. The Japanese have excellent meat dishes and even have steak. Their staples consist of rice, noodles and fish but its a lot deeper than that. The best way to eat like a Japanese is to use chopsticks.

Many Japanese homes have Curry, Spaghetti. Chinese noodles. The older generation stick more or less to fish, miso soup and noodles.

Some kinds of fish, like ice fish and prawns, are sometimes eaten whole while they are still alive. This way of eating fish is very appropriately called 'odori-gui,' or, 'dancing-eat,' meaning 'to eat something that is still moving.' They are literally dancing in your mouth as they are eaten. All the 'odori-gui' are something of a delicacy that only the rich can afford. You'll find them in some expensive sushi bars.
