It's pathetic but it's just the way society has developed.
My theory is this:
Women have been seen as the "under dog", they have been down trodden, expected to "honour and obey", breed, serve their man.
Then came suffrage and feminism. Women went out to work during the wars. Women started wearing trousers etc as it was more practical in the environments they started to work in. It was seen as practical and as a symbol of their independance and equality. So it's seen as OK, fine, no problems.
With men and "women's" clothing there is none of the "practical" and "independence" reasoning to place on it. Therefore there is some thing "weird" or "wrong" about it.
I keep hoping this will change in time and that society will become liberated.
Men can now wear nail polish (even if it's only if they're Gothic or a musician) and that's a start.
We are becoming more liberated and open minded as time goes on. Let's hope it continues!
One thing I'd like to point out the people reading this question and this answer is that most men who wear women's clothing are not gay. This appears to be a common misconception which, for some reason, really really annoys me!

It never really matters. Wear what is comfortable and will blend in out in public. I wear denim skirts out in public all of the time -- as an older male -- with a polo shirt, hose and wedges and a hoodie or jacket when appropriate. All I have ever gotten from people is compliments, and in a LOT of cases women will come up to you and say how nice your legs look in a skirt if you properly take care of them and look normal.
The trick is to wear solids, denim or fine fabrics, 2" above and below the knee with fine hosiery, not the garbage you buy at Walmart. Guys who wear skirts are typically healthier downstairs compared to their counterparts which benefits women significantly, especially when it comes to conception and general overall health. It's also more comfortable, because you don't have to worry about constantly adjusting yourself like you do in pants all day long.
My doctor actually complimented me on wearing skirts, because she says it helps ward off yeast infections which a lot of carpenters get since their pants don't breath and in the office skirts allow for much more comfort and room to move around in, so the dress code for places where I have worked has changed to accommodate men wearing skirts accordingly -- it's the same for both sexes with the exception of shoes. Again, as long as you look good, look normal, not frilly and flowery or flashy, you'll blend in and you will get compliments ! I do all of the time ! :">
The world is changing rapidly...change with it or be left behind...

Because people would think that hes gay or 'weird', its just a stupid gender stereotype. Besides, womens clothes are normally too small for men anyway.
Maybe in the future things might change?

lots of guys wear girl's clothing, while some of them are crosdressers... others aren't. i know lots of guys in bands who wear girl pants because they like the fit better. i actually have a guy friend that is the same size as i am and i give him my old clothes, jeans and some "non girly" shirts and he wears them all the time.

Men wearing women's clothes is associated with male homosexuality. Women wearing men's clothes is not immediately associated with lesbianism, but more often associated with radical feminism and women's equality.

Stupid gender biases. It's stupid. If he wants to cross-dress (which I find incredibly hot), let him, you shouldn't care about how others look at you or what they think. You're not living for other people.

because its a gender thing. sex you are born into the biological side of things, sociologists discribe gender as what society holds to be the role or norms and values of each sex.
