Different people keep one for different reasons.

For me, I like to write out my thoughts and emotions and to try to figure out where I am and what i need to do to get where I want to be. It is a way to stay focused and aware so that I am not wasting time going over the same thoughts over and over. Once they are down on paper I feel I can move on to the next step of whatever it is i am trying to resolve or achieve.

Hi Mic.....

Well, you have a lot of questions here! Reasons people keep a diary:

1) For companionship: Sometimes this may be the only friend a person has.
2) You can trust a diary with your secret thoughts.
3) To preserve memories both for the person and perhaps other family members.
4) To improve their person. For instance, sometimes I write in my diary the things I think I need to improve upon such as health or my general interaction with others.

I do feel that keeping a diary can improve one's life. It is an outlet for one to pour emotions into, that they might not otherwise be able to convey. It aids in memory and learning and therefore wisdom.

A book full of empty (hopefully soon to be filled) pages is one way to keep a diary. Other more modern ways include on-line journals, digital scrapbooking, regular scrapbooking, I could even see myspace being used as a new age, diary. Some people simply keep a word file for this purpose.

Interesting query.... :D

I've been keeping a diary on and off for a while now.

I started writing one three years ago, over the summer, but I didn't have much to write about, so I stopped. I took it up again in March of '06, and wrote in it sporadically for a while-- after going to parties, after emotional things happened in my life, etc. My last entry from that period of my life is 5/24/06. I briefly mentioned a cruise I'd taken, and promised "more details later," but never got back to it. Then, on 5/12/07, almost a full year later, I started writing again. I've been kept it up on and off since then.

I couldn't name just one reason I keep a diary. There are a lot of contributing factors.

The first is that I love writing. I intend to have a book published someday, and what better way to practice than by keeping a journal? As of late, though, I haven't written as much, and I suspect this is because I've been using internet forums as a medium for my writing.

The second is that it helps me figure out my emotions. Sometimes, I say something in conversation that I regret, fearing it hurt someone's feelings, and I dwell over it for the next week or so. By writing in a journal, I keep my emotions in one place, and I can look at the situation more logically and distanced.

The third is that it's good to have a record. I can tell you when I went to my first house party my Freshman year of high school. I can tell you when two of my friends got together, and when they broke up. More importantly, I can remember DETAILS. What exactly did one person say to another to cause hostilities that would last for over a year? What did I tell this person that upset him or her so much?

I'd recommend that everyone TRY using a diary, just once. It helps.

- A way to remember things and reflect, perhaps so they remember what they did and maybe shouldn't have done. We can all learn from mistakes and sucesses, but sometimes it's easier to have them written down.

- Some people treat it like a friend who is guaranteed not to reveal their secrets. It also won't question them and won't answer back, so it's sortof seen as the perfect friend. The problem is that it can't also tell them when they're wrong, but I guess sometimes people don't want to know that.

- There are also those cases like Anne Frank who wrote one that she didn't think anyone would read. Why, I don't know, maybe it was as a companion when she felt she had no one else to talk to. Guess we'll never really know...

As for keeping one - I know blogs are seen as online diaries, but to be honest I think that's just a way for people to inflate their egos a bit (nothing wrong in moderation). A real diary is one that's never meant to be read by anyone else so you can in theory be truthful.

diary is really important.. sometimes, i used to write a diary to let my feelings out.. not all the things we feel and experienced should be told to everybody.. diary will help you understand yourself more and express yourself more.. you can write your own opinion without hurting someone's feelings.. and one more thing, some saints are canonized because of their diaries!=)
