I'm amazed that nobody seems to have perceived what's wrong with this question.

Its not as if one coat of paint goes on first then they do the stripes is it? You honestly think zebras get a flat coat then have stripes painted on top? That's the only way it would make sense to ask this question.

Zebras have black AND white stripes. You see?

It is actually black with white stripes. There is a sound adaptive reason for this. There are no naturally occurring white wild horse species. White horse, colts in particular, would be easy finds for predators. So natural selection would eliminate that color. The natural colors of all equine species is dark brown to dark gray.

I'll go for white with black stripes. Something like a Pinto Pony.

Depends on the species.

We tend to see, in my opinion, black as 'something' and white as 'nothing' or 'an absence of something' so most people will be black on white(?). Or it could be that we are so used to seeing black on white in the form of pen on paper or even the box I'm typing this in that, that is just the way we've been programmed to see it.

Nice question.
