Depends on the car a lot, and even more on how and where it's driven.

That's around 2.5 gallons. Modern 1.6s get around 40 on a run, and about 25 around town, so that's between 65 and 100 miles.

It would be less for an older car.

It depends on the car and the relative proportions of the mix. For example, Toyota do not allow any petrol in their diesel cars because the fuel system relies on diesel to lubricate the pumps and seals. Any petrol in the system can shorten the life of the rubber-like compounds used throughout the system (which would normally last at least ten years). Petrol and diesel in the tank won't mix. They'll form separate layers and will be sucked through to the engine at different times. A problem that can sometimes occur with some engines is that it will stop running when the petrol gets into the engine delivery rail. This is because the combustion characteristics of petrol are very different from diesel and it may not ignite properly. This could leave you stranded miles from anywhere. To prevent disaster don't drive cross-country until you've purged the petrol. In some cases you can mix a small amount of petrol in with your diesel without doing serious damage, but only on a one-off occasion. I would guess that your £9 of petrol is about 8 litres so that is a fairly high proportion compared with about 38 litres of diesel. You might get away with this. Don't take any notice of what some people in cold countries do; they may have different cars to you or are prepared to shorten the life of their fuel delivery system.

it depends on the car, but do you know that Mercedes 220cdi have been known to return 72 miles per gallon of diesel on the motorway. It happened to me I took a photo shot of the dashboard at the time. Merc cdi is a 2.3 litre diesel engine. So on ten pounds worth of diesel @ #4.50 per gallon, we are talking of about 150 miles.

Depends on how fast, the rate of consumption of the specific vehicle, and in what condition/upkeep the vehicle is in (if its well maintained then it will get better fuel economy than if its not).
