I knit hats and scarfs for local charities. You don't need a group to do it, either.
If you are a church-going person, or synagogue or temple or mosque, there may be a group that does that already, most likely a knitting or quilting group.

The holiday is getting close and you don't have much time so I would suggest getting something simple but useful. Why don't you get a few of the women into a seperate group, make up a card and offer their "service" to check daily or every two days or so to talk to homebound and see if they are ok or in need of something. Sometimes this is more important than something they will not use too often. Think about it and imagine yourself in their situation and what you would like to have.

What an awesome idea!! It depends on what you and your friends can do. Can you crochet or knit? Blankets are always nice. There's tons of shelters you can donate them to. Scarves. Mittens/gloves for little ones even.
Try doing a google search to see if you can get more ideas.

We have made simple cloth bags and stuffed them with toiletries for women arriving at the crisis shelter. We've also done tote bags that attach to a walker, and delivered them to a local senior housing complex.

Get everyone to knit squares of the same size, and then sew them altogether to make blankets.
