Look around you! You don't need to be Noam to see that the 'free' world has just insisted on gleefully handing over almost ever basic human right (free speech, right of assembly, legal representation and no imprisonment without trial) to be seen as 'on the right side' in the war on terror.

'They' have been trying to regain control of the population since the students movements in the 60's when they actively got in the way of oppressive regimes.

Yes. It was a great gift to governments -- left, center and right -- to pass legislations to cripple dissent of any kind. This is what can be legally done now in Australia, once a country where individual freedom, democratic rights of dissent, and privacy were taken for granted. Its police can now enter a person's house without a warrant, plant bugs, take away what they want -- and not inform you about what they did until 3 months later, and even that can be waived by the attorney general (a guy who is on record as supported exquisite means of extracting information from detainees). The police can also arrest people for alleged terrorist sympathy and the press cannot report that. Arrested people do not have to be told why they are arrested if the police simply say they have suspicions of terrorist connections. All very convenient for a government that wants to hang on to power. Osama has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams when he swore to destroy the western way of life, the most precious and hard-won aspects were not its fatuous consumerism but its devotion to free speech and individualism -- that guaranteed "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness".
