why do you suppose that 'life' has a 'meaning'?
does a tree have a 'meaning'? does a mountain?
does the colour red have a 'meaning'? does sunlight?

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

I actually wrote an answer to this question recently... This is just one answer... Its an extract of the junk I sometimes write down, it is actualy entitled "perspective of zoom":
...In reality there are reasons for everything yet so many perspectives to talk about everything on. The reason, for instance (using the smallest level of our perspective) for energy is to make up atoms. It has no other purpose. These atoms are then a part of molicules. Do you see what we did there? We took the perspective of atoms and looked at it from a "molicular" perspective. We continued zooming out. The reason for these are for organ systems to exist which are to support a life system. The reason for life systems is somewhat seen as undefined. This is because we ourselves are life systems (i.e. the classical dillema "What is the meaning of life?") Well, continuing this way of thaught the meaning is to make up systems of people; I like the term 'subjective relationships' çe grand non? The reason for these would ultimately (as far as we can zoom out) be to create a universe. But, going back to our level, we see that us as humans require these relationships. Love, hate, mutual bonds of some or other kind. This is a necessary for our souls to be content. It is for us to feel fullfilled. Fulfillment is indeed the meaning of life. We seek it on a primal level. The reason you do anything, indeed, is for this fulfillment. To 'be happy'...
I believe this to be a possible reason for our existance. Another answer might be seen when we look into magic. The trick is only amazing until we know the secret. Something to think about because it agrees with my theory :)

For me life is for regeneration of every thing, thats why we like new kids, new plants, (all these are fresh), new ideas, new techniques and the life goes on. I think we were born to search for some thing new, always new, newer is better and there is never end. So keep on looking for new things in life, new friends, new days, new jobs, new techniques, new ideas, .............and stop when you can not do so and then die...(now your body can not regenerate new cells, new skins and new things, so you have to die)

garwy of course a tree has a meaning...how could anything survive without tree's...? They clean the air, provide homes for animals of all kinds etc...
I don't have the time to write a "universal" answer, and an answer to your example,
but its down to 2 possibilities as I see it,
1.god created us and we are supposed to follow his rules and return to him. or 2.there is no god, and there is no real purpose except to reproduce and hope our genes will live on in future generations.

Why does everyone believe that it has to have a 'meaning'?
Just live it and enjoy it and try not to go too far out of your way to fµck things up for others and for the generations to follow. When you're dead, you're dead for a -very- long time.

Life is meant to be lived. Cliche, I know, but...
I think that if you have fun, be honest/truthful, keep true to yourself, and have a positive impact on the lives of others, your life is lived.
On a universal level, the meaning of life is what each individual makes of it and what impact they make on their own life and the lives of others, positive or negative.

You must have heard of this saying - "Live and let live". Now, this is the meaning of life.
You have to live happily as you wish. But you must not be a disturbance to others. Bcoz they are also here to "live and let live".
