I have a DSL modem that can only connect to my pc via USB. However, I have a wireless router from Netgear that I want to use to go wireless. It only has ethernet ports so can I share my internet connection from my pc wirelessly by connecting the router to my pc's ethernet slot?

i.e. modem to pc (via usb), pc to wireless router (via ethernet)

OK, so i have enabled internet sharing and when i stick the ethernet cable into my other laptop it works.. however, i stick it into my netgear wireless router, the lights come on saying its detected the internet...i then run through a quick set up and it says it has detected my dynamic ip DHCP and configures my internet accordingly.... my laptop establishes a great connection with the wireless router but still no internet. another interesting point is that netgear's setup can be accessed by typing in www.netgear.com. it works at the start but a couple of minutes later, typing this in gets me just a blank screen and i can't accesss the router set-up screen anymore...

Well, you can enable internet connection sharing on your computer and then connect the router to your computer. It is not be best solution because your computer will NOT be networked with those connected to the router unless you disable the routers DHCP and NAT! You can find the tutorial at
http://microsoft.com

If it were me, I would see if I could get an ethernet modem!

ADDED.
You need to disable NAT and DHCP in the router! That will allow your laptop to connect. You computer is already suppling those so you don't need them within the router. If your router has a "bridge" setting enable it.

you ought to use the Linksys on the spot router as an get entry to ingredient or as a router. To have it as a router, take the output (making use of a cable) from the DSL Modem and fasten it to the left maximum socket. you are able to perceive it with a visibly distinctive print around it. this form you will would desire to configure the DHCP on the Linksys router to assign IPs to the computers connecting to it. To have it artwork like an get entry to ingredient (that doesn't do any handle translation), take the output from the DSL Modem and fasten it to ANY socket however the only that announces "connect internet right here" (the only with a visibly distinctive print around it). doing so which you do not would desire to do any configuration and your DSL router this is unquestionably configured by using your provider provider will do the DHCP stuff. stable success
