Yes. Follow your doctor's advice. Your medical doctor should be a psychiatrist. Family doctors may not be so good at diagnosing mental disorders.
See a psychologist. They have the time to talk to you, to find out if your condition is physical or if there may be some emotional cause. Psychologists don't prescribe or recommend meds.
Xanax is a good medication for anxiety. Hang in there.

The Xanax is intended to be a temporary fix until you can see a psychologist and develop better coping skills. It is highly addictive. If you have panic attacks then it certainly cannot hurt to see a psychologist to help alleviate them.
As for the person asking who is prescribing the Xanax...Primary Care Physicians are doing it right and left.

I've been on Xanax before. Actually, three years. At first, my doctor prescribe then and than a psychatrist.
While the Xanax is very effective it was therapy that helped the most. You might want to try your doctor's suggestion. You might be surprised on how therapy can help you.

Yes it would.Medication and psychotherapy are necessary for effective treatment. Psychologists come from different schools of thought. Go through your phone book. Ask what kind of therapy(school of though) they practice .Write down what kind of therapy they use and then make up your mind what you want. Personality is important If a therapist and you have personalty clashes then look for another therapist.Ask her/him where they went to school. They should have either a masters degree or a PhD. Be patient with your self because. Change doesn't happen over night

I don't know why he would want you to see a psychologist...the difference in a psychiatrist and a phsychol is that one can prescribe meds...But be careful with the xanax, as it can cause seizures if you try to ween off it it too quick...I think that you should pray to God and Jesus instead, and ask for their help and guidance...

No guarantees, but it definitely could. Psychologists can assist with determining whether there may be other meds that are better for you. They can also teach you cognitive therapy techniques that will put you in more control of your feelings and hopefully allow you to reduce or eliminate the need for the medication over time.

It is my opinion that all anxiety and depression drugs should be taken with some form of therapy. The therapy can help you to figure out where your fears and anxiety is coming from. Ideally we dont want to be on meds our whole life, right?I know for some the meds are a nessary part of life, but we should look at all sorces of recovery.
