My PS3 constantly becomes hot even when I play it for like half an hour and the ventilation fans also turn on in around 5 mins. If I keep my PS3 in a more open area will this problem then be solved. When does the ventilation fans usually turn on when the PS3 is kept in a more open area?

It should help to keep it better ventilated. I don't usually notice how often they come on with mine, but as long as they go off again they're doing there job (i.e. it's cooled the machine down)
The right hand side (as it lays flat) gets warmest where it's chucking out all the heat.
You could get an add-on fan if you're really concerned, but i've been using mine for 6 months (lying flat on a small table) without one and not had any problems at all.

It just needs some space "to breathe". Don't use intercoolers - they make everything worse.
