Depending on how old your children are, Italian Greyhounds are not a good choice. They are VERY fragile and their legs are broken quite easily.
How old are your children?
I wouldn't recommend a Dalmation either. I haven't studied a lot on this breed, but I do know after the 101 Dalmation movies the shelters were loaded with this poor breed- due to people not understanding about the breed and buying from poor quality breeders.
A Beagle would make a great family pet. They are excellent with kids.
Also, may I suggest a Basset Hound? That is what we decided to go with, after several months of trying to decide what breed would work well for us.

I think dogs can have as many individual personalties inside a breed as well as outside. You can have great or terriable in any breed, but some breeds do tend to follow certian traits.
My son and daughter-in-law have a new son who is now 3 months old. They also have two pound dogs of about 2 years.
The first dog is a rat terrier who so full of energy that if I could can in and sell it , I could power half of NYC. He is just a great dog. He needs lots of sittin in your chair in the evening and gettin lots of rubbin. He also needs lots of backyard time not on a leash so he can go through his hunting routine. He never wants to catch anything but he wants to chase the squirrls, rabbits, neighbors cat, and occasional skunk. He is quite good with my newborne grandson. If you pick up the child, the terrier will come and give you both a sniff and then go back to being interested in whatever else is going on.
The other dog they adopted is a 80 lb+, dalmatian male. He is one of the few dalmatians that I have seen to be such a laid back, give me some luvin, dog. He often goes out with the tarrier and just watches the excitement without getting much involved.
I have noticed that the dalmatian is very protective of my grandson. If someone who the dog dosen't know well gets between him and the baby, he will let you know by one of those single big barks that shakes the windows.
My kids have a large coutch because if anyone sits on it, the dalmation will come and get as close to them as possible and thump that large tail untill the proper amount of belly rubbin is applied.
If anyone arrives at the front door, the dalmatian will let you know long before the doorbell goes off.
So all in all I would say that they picked up two great pound dogs. I would recomment to anyone that you get your dog from your local pound and not be afraid to take them back if they don't fit your family unit or situation. Sonner or later you will find your companion.

Italian greyhounds may be too small and fragile to be around children. Dalmations usually aren't the best choice for children due to temperament.
Beagles are pretty good with children though.
For children, a dog at least 20 pounds would be ideal. You can find many dogs that fit this criteria at the shelter or on www.petfinder.com

Dogs are all unique and you cant really judge their temprement by their breed alone, but generally speaking, dogs such as Beagles, Basset Hounds, Labs, and Retrievers and good with children. Dalmatians and the like are lovely but can be quite boysterous in play and could accidently harm children.
Also Greyhounds, whippets etc are quite fragile so probably wouldnt be the best choice for a house with kids.
I think the best family dog would be something like a Labrador or Beagle.
Good luck.

All Dogs are wonderful. May I suggest using one of the Internet search engines and simply type in the breed you want to know more about. Much of your choice has to do with the amount of exercise the Dog needs, and about your own personality. I was given a pure bred Rottweiler 25 years ago and I have always had at least one ever since. You should also consider how much the particular breed you are interested in sheds.Even short haired breeds shed. I am told that poodles do not shed and they are wonderful companion dogs and come in a variety of sizes

From the three choices It is the Beagle for sure .
I am not an expert , But my brother has a beagle ... gets along great with my young kids, but you have to watch them in that they tend to follow whatever scent they smell , without any concern for home.
The Dalmation looks very cool BUT usually too hyper .
Is a greyhound really a dog anybody really wants for children?
I did have a lab as a child and they are Fantastic , something to consider...

Definitely want to go with the Beagle out of those three dogs. Dalmatian's aren't super intelligent and have a nasty streak. They are not good with kids. Any of the dogs in the greyhound family are pretty hyper and/or flighty. Beagles are sweet, loving, good with kids and smart. They can also be very loud, loving to bray like most hounds do...might want to keep that in mind if you live in suburbia.
If you are looking for other options for dogs that are good with kids: Australian Blue Healer, any Lab and Britanny Spaniels.

I say go with a beagle, they're tough little dogs with good energy, and if the kids are good to them they're great with them.
Dalmations are, quite often, bad with kids. Even if they're not mean to them. They're big dogs, and its very common for big dogs to hurt kids without meaning to.
Italian Greyhounds are fragile and small, They're also timid. NOT a kid oriented dog.
But, overall, if you do want some energy, I've yet to meet a lab who wasn't good with kids, just make sure you get a puppy and that your kids know to be careful.
If you want low-maintence, get a shihtzu. They don't shed, and they're hypoallergenic, I also have one and she's a /sweetie/. (Though..she doesn't like kids who are strangers. But she was nearly strangled by a rough little girl when she was younger) if you get their hair cut maybe two or three times a year, you just have to brush occasionally and you're good to go!

My first dog was a beagle. They are great dogs, small manageable yet sturdy. Very nice temperament if socialized properly.

italian greyhounds are very "breakable" they have the thinnest leg bones of any dog breed, if your kids are running and trip over him they will break its leg, also they are very nervous dogs.
a beagle is a dog used in the uk for hunting foxes, therefore it is bred into them to chase, roam and be aggressive towards other small animals, and believe me they do roam, and they are very independent and do not listen.
a dalmation would be the best out of these three, they were bred to be a carriage dog and walk beside the carriages of rich people and therefore needed to be obedient and calm.
