I just finished a 7 day course of Prednisone 40my/day for back inflamation. I already have the fluid retention, weight gain, and full face from this short dose. Is this normal and will I return to normal soon. Also the doctor didn't wean me off this dosage, which I don't know is rare for short term use. My glands are swollen, and I can't sleep. Do I risk infection and will my body return to normal soon after discontinuation of this medication. Also will the pain reemerge again due to the short term use and not weaning off the medication?

Side effects of prednisone are reversible by itself once the medication is stopped or the dose is dropped to 5 mg or less.

The fluid retention and puffy face will go shortly in few weeks. I believe the weight gain you had after a week of treatment is not that much and most likely due to the fluid retention, so it won't be difficult to get back to your desired weight. Take note that your appetite could have improved for a while with such treatment, so better watch your diet as you probably could gain more if you fall on enjoying your meals.

You are right- short term use does not require tapering (reducing gradually). But tapering after taking the medication for more than 3 days is of advantage to avoid development of minor symptoms of steroid withdrawal. Such symptoms include: joint and muscle pains, fatigue, headache, fever, and nausea and vomiting.

Your risk for infection is not that much but better to be careful for a shortwhile. The sleeping difficulty you have hopefully will clear fairly rapidly. Also,it would be of help to limit your salt intake for a while.

Hopefully you will be fine, many who have been taking the medication for a couple of months (but less than 3 months) had tolerated stopping without tapering the dose.

Prednisone and oral Budesonide will have similar side effects since they are both corticosteroids. Unfortunately Prednisone can be associated with several side effects as you know. The weight gain is mainly from fluid retention, which is reversible once you discontinue the medication. The moon face and buffalo hump are a result of abnormal fat distribution and these will resolve once Prednisone is discontinued. The fact that you are skinny does not make these side effects more or less likely to occur. High dose Prednisone can lead to depression and psychosis in some people. You should watch for this with your history of Bipolar disorder. Long term Prednisone use is associated with some long term consequences, such as the development of osteoporosis. For these reasons, the high dose Prednisone should be used for the shortest period of time possible and alternative therapies should be considered, such as Imuran or Remicaide.

Prednisone is used alone or with other medications to treat the symptoms of low corticosteroid levels (lack of certain substances that are usually produced by the body and are needed for normal body functioning). Prednisone is also used to treat other conditions in patients with normal corticosteroid levels. These conditions include certain types of arthritis; severe allergic reactions; multiple sclerosis (a disease in which the nerves do not function properly); lupus (a disease in which the body attacks many of its own organs); and certain conditions that affect the lungs, skin, eyes, kidneys blood, thyroid, stomach, and intestines. Prednisone is also sometimes used to treat the symptoms of certain types of cancer. Prednisone is in a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works to treat patients with low levels of corticosteroids by replacing steroids that are normally produced naturally by the body. It works to treat other conditions by reducing swelling and redness and by changing the way the immune system works.
Consult your doctor.

Weight gain and moon face from a week of treatment? Yes, that s quite rare. My sister has lupus and she took that medication long term. It took her over a month to gain weight from it, but I suppose everyone is different. I m currently taking it for 7 days, due to a pneumonia I have. I haven t noticed any side effects. If anything I ve lost weight from loss of appetite due to my illness.
It really shouldn t be hard for you to lose the weight though, since its not "fat" but just fluid retention. Just give it a few weeks and wait it out.
