Met a newcomer to our village this morning.
Got talking as one does. To cut a long story short - his father flew glider planes in WWII. My father jumped out of planes (!) as a paratrooper in Airborne Div., both his father and my father were taken prisoner at Arnhem, Netherdlands. The site of a battle of note (A Bridge Too Far/The Longest Day).

I hail from Scotland. He was brought up in France. We are both immigrants to this part of the world.

We both own GOLDEN RETRIEVER dogs!

What are the chances of ALL those things coming together?
Spooky or what?

As someone once said - It's a small world, until the time comes to paint it!

SPIDER: Thanks for your answer - you are right but I would just say this - if you knew anything about ARNHEM I rather think that you would understand why - in fact - VERY FEW MEN CAME BACK.
However - both the soldiers/fathers have now passed away - and as Jilly said - it is just good to remember the sacrifices these brave, brave young men made. AND NO - THERE IS NO MOTIVE WHATSOEVER IN BEFRIENDING THIS CHAP OTHER THAN COMMON COURTESY OF NEIGHBOURS.

BILL S. : Thank you - what a lovely thought! Perhaps the two young men did say something like 'We will have a pint one day when we get out of this' - and my new found friend and I will ensure that - in some small way - they will!

Cool!

I wouldn't take it as anything earth shattering though....
My ex-husband grew up all over the world, but not once in Ontario where I lived my whole life. Until he was an older teenager and he came out to Ontario to visit with his oldest brother, who employed him as a helper in his heating and plumbing business. They installed the furnace of a restaurant right down the street from where I live.
When we met in the Armed Forces, he was originally interested in my best friend, who wouldn't have anything to do with him. And I got involved with him, because I felt sorry for him. (Are you getting the picture here?)
Bad decisions about men seem to be a specialty of mine.

We too marvelled that we had been so close to each other physically at one point, but had never met. And then fate threw us together again (to the detriment of both of us).

So don't be reading anything "special" into this coincidence. It is nice to marvel at how small the world actually is. (Six degrees of separation, and all... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_separation )

Wow what a wonderful chance to put some personal history down on paper. These sorts of things should be kept. Sadly people see history as something Kings and Queens do but its NOT, its us ordinary people who live these amazing lives.

To the extent that "nice things happen to nice people",
I believe in coincidence. Like De Ja Vu all over again.

I accept as true with Mrs. Cleaver...actual i think in destiny, kismet, etc. i comprehend i does no longer be married to my soul-mate now, if it weren't real... Our tale will blow your concepts..and in lots of situations turns individuals into believers.. I even have faith God (or destiny or in spite of you suspect in) places people on your course at moments once you like them...in spite of if it is for a lesson or a life-time...besides the undeniable fact that it is as much as US to be open to "see" it....

Maybe yours and yr new neighbours's father said : " Hope we see each other again!" .
Who knows there was a wish for the same "attachement".

Good luck, it's really awesome.
If both fathers still alive, am sure they both are happy to meet each other again under this circumstances.

Well I for one do not believe in coincidence! I think we all pass in and out of different peoples lives for a reason not yet known to us ! It's always nice to meet someone who knew our parents berfore we did.
