There are "secret shopper" groups like Kern that have customers who pay you for having an exam (cost of exam plus ten buck fee) done as a way to make sure their employees are treating customers well. No I am not an employee there and am sure not getting a penny for mentioning them here.

Here was something they sent about a well known nationwide US client of their's:
"***This retailer is now offering glasses at BUY ONE GET ONE FREE!*** New changes to this shop. For this shop you will get ANY exam you wish as long as the exam will give you a prescription for EYEGLASSES. You will be reimbursed up to $65 toward the cost of your exam. The eye glass purchase is OPTIONAL but the shopper needs to at least get a quote on new glasses. The shopper must obtain a receipt for the eye exam in order to be reimbursed for it ***

*** Total pay for this shop is $10 plus exam free***"

An average price for an eye exam for glasses: $75
Can be less if you ask for "refraction only" where they only determine your glasses prescription and not other eye health issues.

A standard contact lens fitting raises the exam cost to about $125. If you have astigmatism and need toric contacts, the cost can rise to $150 or $175.

These are just typical numbers, and prices vary greatly depending on the business model. Some optometrists are lower cost, higher volume. Some are higher cost and spend more time with the patient. There are also some high-cost, high-volume doctors. Try to avoid those!

Also, most independent doctors will negotiate their rates a little if you pay cash at the time of service. The first number they are going to quote you is "MSRP." Don't be afraid to ask!
