Being the owner of now two 4th Generation f-bodies. My first being a 98 M6 TransAm(totaled) and now an 02 A4 Camaro Z28. I've done my share of performance mods on both the TA and the Z28. Thro, I tried one of the Hypertech ppp3 re-programmers on my x 96 Impala SS. Never again, that to me was the biggest waste of $350. bucks, I've ever done. But, here's some info on the hand held re-programmer. Thro, I would suggest going w/ a custom tuned program from Tunercat or 'The Ostrich' from Moates.

Q: What performance "chips/programs" are available?

A: For the 1993 cars, Hypertech, Jet Technologies, Z Industries and Superchips make replacement chips. HP increases vary from 15 up to 30. However, in 1994 and after, chips are soldered into the on-board computer and can't be removed. Hypertech gets around this with their Power Programmer, a hand- held "computer" which plugs into the PCM module under the driver-side dash, and reprograms the stock chip. Performance gains are almost the same as replacing the chip. The programmer costs about $300, considerably more than the $150 - $200 you'd expect to pay for a replacement chip.

The Hypertech Program increases redline and shift points (on auto trannies) by about 500 RPM over stock, and it improves the fuel and timing curves. The cooling fans are forced to coming on at lower temperatures. Any type of speed limiter will be overridden. It can also adjusting the speedometer for changes to aftermarket gears (like a 3.73). However, it doesn't modify the partial throttle shift points on cars with automatic trannies. Thus, even with the programmer, partial throttle shifts will still occur at higher RPMs than with the stock gearing. But most companies can create a custom chip or program to overcome this.

The Programmer can also be sent back to Hypertech to be reprogrammed to take advantage of modifications like headers, camshafts, and superchargers. One other thing to remember is to run 92+ octane fuel with the chip/programmer. Otherwise the engine is probably going to knock due to the timing change.

Plus, there's some other tricks you can do to get some more hp out of the LT1 in the links below.

Good luck!

I own a shop, and think you are on to the right answer. A good set of headers, some good pipes, and some good flowing cat converters & mufflers will do wonders for the car. A $1,000 budget won't get you much, so I would suggest spending it on the exhaust system. This is where you will get the most bang for the buck, and you could pick up that 50 horses. Check out www.fuelairspark.com for an upgrade for the computer, but then again for that amount of money I don't know you will be able to get both the exhausts, and a computer upgrade. Like I said before; the exhaust is where you can pick up the most for the money. You can also check out www.chevyhiperformance.com and they have all kinds of ideas that you can use, along with much information on where to get the upgrades. They ran a article in their magazine not long ago about this, and if you can find it online, it is well worth reading. Its full of cheap things one can do to make more power on a budget.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

the other answers are crap.. jaymax is close though, so props to him.. i can tell you right now.. on a 100% stock LT1 a set of PaceSetter long tube headers will add 12 horsepower and 17 ft-lbs of torque.. If your looking for power for the LT1, you will be surprised by replacing the stuff that caused trouble and headaches over the years how much power you'll pick up.. first get rid of the opti-spark and pick up a new distributor from JEGS, ACCEL, or MSD.. the MSD ignition kit showed increased gains with every basic bolt on.. when i had my LT1 vette.. i put the MSD ignition kit on after only having long tube headers, and a cold air intake.. i picked up an extra 11 horsepower and 9 ft-lbs of torque.. and seemingly every bolt-on from there ended up in more power than posted.. after the basic bolt ons i went to a LT4 conversion from edelbrock for an increase of over 50rwhp and 50rwtq (numbers are at a loss for me right now, but it was over over 50 for both).. and after all of that, i tore the motor down rebuilt it into a 383 LT1/4 stroker.. i still have my dyno slips from it making 570 horsepower and 570 ft-lbs

This penny stock service has years of proven experience. Ultimately it is the best service for beginners to use https://tr.im/KAxcy
You will have to wait between 3 and 10 days to get into the system in most cases. When I signed up it took 8 days. I wished it was faster, but if you can wait a week or two to start earn life changing money than you will have what it takes to make it in this business.

You can get a Super charger or turbo Charger put on your 5.7 liter change the camshafts get a the engine rebuilt with better high quality parts. put in the best plugs, oil and filters. Put good wires on possibly get a chip. To Put in for more Horse power. Msd Ignition Aluminum drive shaft I guess if you go light weight your car could go faster maybe a carbon fiber hood or fiberglass A better exhaust system. That is what I did to my Camaro I use to make 225 horse now I make 325 which is pretty good.

Go with a small nitrous oxide system---fairly easy to install, does not change any original engine operating parameters and usually, only kicks on at wide open throttle...have to fill the bottle periodically depending on usage but it's worth 100-150 HP depending on system you get. Can be shut off for dyno tests and does not interfere with emissions...can also be removed when you sell the car or transferred to another one. Put one on my brother's 96 Z28 in about 6 hours and he now runs 12.80 in the 1/4 mile with a 150 HP version.
