"If anyone secretly entices you--even if it is your brother, your father's son or your mother's son, or your own son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your most intimate friend-- saying, "Let us go worship other gods" you must not yield to or heed any such persons. Show them no pity or compassion and do not shield them. But you shall surely KILL them; your own hand shall be first against them to execute them, and then the hand of all the people. Stone them to death for trying to turn you away from the Lord your God." (Deut 13:6-10)

The Law is intolerant. While the Gospel is dependent upon faith. Read all about it in Romans 3.

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

26To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

Because survival was difficult back then particularly for people in this region, so death was very very common and perhaps not as horrifying as we see it.

And because the guy who wrote the passage didn't want people straying off and taking people out of his temple and into someone else's.

I don't believe that everything in the Bible is the word of God, and this would be one of those instances. It's a passage written by some guy trying to make sure the "church" held onto its flock.

God picks prophets to carry his message, He did not order His prophets to be killed. This is an example of corruption in the torah. This because people didn't like the message.
