Geomancy originally was casting soil on the ground and observing the marks and divining the future from it. Later it became the practice of making random marks in the soil with one's finger or a wand. This was a very widespread form of divination. There are indications in the Bible, John 8:6 that Jesus may have practiced this. When the Pharisees questioned him about the woman taken in adultery, he wrote with his finger on the ground.

Later, it began to mean divining by any objects cast on the ground.
