A friend of mine said he prefers electric stove tops.

I prefer gas because I can hear what I'm doing with the stove.
Example

click, click, click, wimpy whoosh. means its going like it should. Adjust the knob, then listen for the right about of "hiss" and continue.

click, click, click, nothing. electrical ignition failure.

Where as electric I just guess, and listen for the right sound.

This site seems to suggest that gas might be better for blind cooks, in their cooking area:
http://www.nfb.org/images/nfb/Publications/fr/fr04/Issue3/f040304.html
...but not sure... I didn't read the whole page.

You might more info from various blind associations online and also online groups for the blind in general.

Here are some other sites to check out:

to test for temp with electric you must drip a drop of water into the pan and listen for the sizzel, either can be gotten used to. while not blind, i also prefer gas to electric and would ruin anything i tried to cook if i had to go back.
i suspect you must have powerful concentration in order to be able to do this , so my hat is off to you.

my bro is blind and we were alot safer with an electric stove, we also had the C.N.I.B. (canadian national institute for the blind) come to our house and mark out the settings on the stove and oven for my bro to use.

For him I'd choose electric if he can't see, he'll learn by touch. But it would have to modify for him so he knows how hot is to hot. We use our sight if his sight is gone then for him touch, hearing, smelling. He would have to search what's out there. Ask for him like Best Buy,Home Depot,Loew's they carry stoves. And he'll reward you with a dinner on his new stove.
