Athough St Thomas came to India and did preach, he remained at the southern tip, where he was eventually martyred. Therefore in the south Christianity is growing and is also flourishing. But as to the rest of India, other religions prevailed because of visible signs of worship and ritualistic incantations and practices which appealed to the indian psyche of superstition and distrust in the unknown.
The religions of India, take root largely from the tribal practices where, some form of drama is necessary to feel god, without which god is apparently not there. Moreover, they are also a kind of practice where it is believed that if one were to let's say, offer 100 coconuts, god would manifest himself, etc.
With Christianity however, this is not the case and therefore, there was the reluctance to accept a faith in which you just believed and God did good things to you. It was difficult to believe this...No explicit rituals, no self inflicting torments, meant no god. In fact, this problem also arose in the early church, a whiff of which we get in Paul's letter to the Colossians Ch. 2. The concept of 'syncretism' too manifested itself but was instantly scotched by the early church Fathers.
This in a way was a major block for spreading and accepting Jesus Christ. But more than that I must say, that we Indians do not show the love of Jesus Christ. Besides, we also do not believe that it is our divine duty to preach the Gospel both in word and in deed. That is why today, Christianity is just not growing. The fault lies not in the teachings of Christ but in our not following His teachings. If we did that, people would follow. Just as when you strike a match, light is bound to result! Another thing faulty in us is lack of belief in miracles. We see no miracles because we do not believe. If only we believed, we could have demonstrated that our God is alive and active even today, for Paul does say, 'for the Kingdom of God is not in word alone, but in Power (1Cor. 4:20)

Christianity Growing In India

It's your decision. There are some things you ought to consider. The first being that circumcision is a painful procedure. What are your motives? I have had Muslim friends for at least 49 years. Most of them are moderate. Muslim converts I have met have always worried me. They seem to become aggressively Muslim. During the debate about France and Belgium banning the full face veil, two veiled women appeared on TV. They were both converts and had not been put under pressure by their Muslim husbands. I may or may not follow a religion, but I would certainly not chose a religion because it is 'entertaining'.

In India, most people are either Hindu or Muslim. Hindus do not mind accepting another religion. It is just because Christianity demands you to give up all other religions. So most Indians can not become Christians.

Same thing happens to the Japanese. Because of Shintoism, most Japanese can not be become Christians.

They are increasing, but not to the extent of the efforts put in and money spent. Some don't disclose the conversion for the fear of losing some benefits.
As long as the Govt turns a blind eye to the development of the villages and does not ensure literacy and social justice this will go on surreptitiously. So don't underestimate such forces.

India, is a vedic country. It's too rich with their culture and traditions worth over 5000 years. There's nothing wrong with christianity. Hinduism is a tolerant 'following', it teaches you to accept everything. I'm a Hindu and i don't see what the fundamental flaw is for christianity not to grow, other than that hindus believe what they want to believe in. You cannot impose or rather one should not have a religion shoved down his throat. And when he refuses, be told that he'd burn in hell. Hinduism doesn't do that, it lets you be. Believe what you want, peace with self, God is everywhere. God is many but one.

Christians are considered terrorists in Northern India

Christian Terrorists Kill 44, Wound 118 in Attacks in Northeast India

GUWAHATI, India (AFP)

October 2, 2004

Some 44 people were killed and 118 wounded in three nearly simultaneous bomb blasts Saturday morning in Dimapur, Nagaland's commercial hub, in what a top official called the "worst ever terrorist strike" in the tiny state's history.

Gunmen in neighbouring Assam state later killed 15 villagers and injured a dozen more, police said.

"There were limbs everywhere and blood was splattered all over," said student leader T. Zheviho who was at crowded Dimapur railway station where one bomb exploded as passengers awaited a train.

Two other bombs went off in the Hong Kong market, which sells Chinese goods, and an adjacent market.

"I had a miraculous escape," Zheviho told AFP by telephone from Dimapur, 70 kilometers (45 miles) east of Nagaland capital Kohima.

Police said the plastic explosive RDX appeared to have been used in the railway blast that created a huge crater beside a platform.

"We found a briefcase with fuse wires... it contained RDX and a timer-device," V. Peseyie, Dimapur additional police chief, said.

The armed insurgency in Nagaland began soon after much of the local population converted to Christianity. Many militant groups, seeking to secede from India to form an independent Christian state, are funded and armed by the Southern Baptist Church. Some of the groups such as the National Liberation Front of Tripura have been involved in a campaign of “gunpoint conversions” and “ethnic cleansing” of native non-Christians, which has left over 50,000 dead and many more refugees over the past two decades.
