Hindus pray to images of Lord Ganesha, large and small, many of them made specially for the occasion by cottage industries and street side artisans. At the beginning of Puja the Lord is invoked by chanting mantras and if you wish to keep the idols for more number of days you have to offer special daily Pujas offer Naivediams, etc. as per the custom. this is one reason for immersing the idols in the nearest water body (all rivers, lakes and the sea which are sacred to Hindus).
This function is called Visarjan. It is said that the Gods after the pujas go back to their Heavenly abode and for this reason they are immersed.
Also the Idols are made of Clay and they have to finally mix with Soil in the river, tank, sea etc.-

The idea is that the ganapathy that people worship during the Ganesh chathurthy every year is like the urchava Morthy of the Deity in temples .every year people use a new one .After the celebration , they can not keep it for ever as every year a new one would e added to the stock if they were to be kept .they can not be thrown away in the garbage like trash and so they are required to be dissolved in the running waters .That is why the idol is required to be made of clay. But now-a-days people have started using plaster of Paris or making the images and this one does t dissolve in water and so when they are immersed in water , they remain there in the water .This practice is now a hindrance and is affecting environment .

It is called Visarjana (farewell).A parade usually occurring on the 3/ 5 /11th day after Ganesha Chaturthi, in which the Ganesha murtis made for the occasion are taken in procession to a body of water and ceremoniously immersed and left to dissolve. This represents Ganesha's merging with the ocean of consciousness.

Mostly whatever has been represented as Hinduism mainly dealt all the ceremonies in respect of water. Apart from the term Hinduism also one can analyze about the five natural elements - air, water, earth (land), fire, space. The one we can externally in touch with or realize through your five senses and make it as your part is none other than water. Think about the remaining four cosmic sources and try to experience through the five senses and make it as you (if you drink water will become your content of the body), it will not have completeness as like water. So in order to secure the water safely in pure state for the mankind, we are pleasing the main lord after serving/offering him (in the form of pooja) to be the content or part of the all forms of water sources and make them available in the purest form. Using clay some small forms of Lord Ganesh statues can be possibly made and utilize for this purpose. Please don t make his idols in big size with non-biodegradable materials (Plastics, etc.) which is not be pleasing request toward him to make the water resources pure and perfect, instead people are polluting the pleasant resource (H2O) with their ignorance and lack of awareness it seems. Spiritualism is the potential field of true knowledge, please don t entangle in the old stories and fictions.
Think and analyze about the answer by closing your eyes as like layman and ask your soulful brain, things will work toward it. I was not clearly elaborated it because it is subjected for the core spiritual revelation!

Hindus whilst seen as Idol worshippers are merely being seen superficially. Idol worship has a deeper meaning to it. that's in lots of circumstances delved into intimately another time. to respond to your question the Idol is in basic terms a means to worship the very ideal in considered one of its appear varieties. exceedingly to Ganapati, he's the Omkar swaroop of the very ideal. His style itself is of deep non secular and philosophical meaning which has been defined via many in solutions to assorted questions. The Idol is merely dirt and textile stuff procured from nature and processed via guy. The idol will become venerable in basic terms after a perfect invocation of the very ideal is achieved into it. Then it is going to become a consultant of the very ideal. for this reason earlier immersing the idol a "Visarjan" Pooja is complete wherein the invoked power is dissolved from the idol thereby returning it to its textile style. for this reason what gets immersed isn't the very ideal yet merely the supplies. It additionally shows the philosophy that for the period of this worldwide not something is for ever, this ritual of visarjan shows and teaches us to triumph over "Moha" the maya of love. dirt that we tread universal is an identical used interior the Idols, however the idol will become 'poojya' in basic terms after pratishthapana. that's the version. desire this permits thank you

it is just a tradition that is followed in West India.
It signifies "From Earth to Earth" .. The idols are made of clay and they go back into the sea or other water that disolves it.
nothing else to it.
