She isn't spayed and is about a year old. She is a rat terrier, and she is in heat. We had her on her run leash outside (since I don't want blood all over my house and she tears off the diapers) in our fenced-in back yard when we went to the pool. We came home to find her literally "stuck" to a male dog. He got his penis stuck inside her and tried to run away when he saw us, taking her backwards with him. Sounds horrible, but it was a funny sight. He appeared to be a pit bull or maybe a pit bull mix but I don't know how old he was. He wouldn't let us get close enough to find tags and call his owners to get his details and make sure they know they WILL be paying for some of the vet bill since he wasn't properly contained. So, since I know she had sex, how do I know if she's pregnant and what do I do? She dripped some discharge on the steps- I assume semen. I don't even know if the male was old enough to get her pregnant or if she can carry his pups. What if the pups are too big?

She is too young. Call a vet and get her spayed immediately. If he is a pit or pit mix, the pups will be way too large even if she were old enough to be bred, which she isn't. If you can't afford for a regular vet to spay her, call your local shelter for a low cost spay/neuter clinic in your area. It will also eliminate the bleeding that you are sooo concerned aabout in your home. Don't you now that tying her outside unattended can result fighting with strange dogs over breeding and can get her killed?

You must assume she is pregnant if you actually witnessed the "tie". And as good as it might feel to hand half the vet bill over to the papa-to-be; it is not how it works in the real world.

You probably don't want to hear this, but you and only you are responsible for this incident. You didn't want the mess in your house so you "staked her out" for any wondering Casanova with a good nose to find. Not only did you risk an unplanned and unwanted litter; but as someone else pointed out; you could have come home to find her dead as the result of a dog fight she could not possibly avoid.

You can't fix what you do not acknowledge. Your negligence was not "intentional"; but it did contribute to this problem. You need to step up the plate and vow that you will never let this happen again to a dog that is in your care, custody and control. In other words, LEARN from this mistake in judgement.

The good news, if this just happened today, then rush her to a Vet. There is a shot they can give to prevent her from having this litter. That being said, the best method of prevention and keeping your home free from the "mess" of a girl in season ...
you KNOW THE ANSWER. Have her SPAYED immediately. No litter. No puppies so big that they might kill her in whelp and/or require a very expensive c-section. No more problems.

Spay her! Breath a sigh of relief and enjoy peace of mind knowing you did the right thing by your dog. Good luck.

Well I would not see it as funny what happened with the dogs as both could have been badly hurt. Yes it does happen and no it's not funny.

You NEVER leave an unspayed female outside in heat because this is going to happen. It may well of happened several times too. Maybe something as big as a German Shepherd or even bigger could have got to her. If you don;t get them spayed you have to put up with the blood and mess.

If a male is old enough to breed her he's old enough to get her pregnant.

Take her to a vet right away and get her spayed. If she is pregnant which she probably is the pups will be too large for her to birth naturally so she will need a costly c-section. Even then the puppies maybe too big for her to carry to term so you may end up losing her and the pups.

Oh and as for those vet bills... they are all yours. No one even in court would put the blame on the owner of the male as he is just following his insticts to breed with the female. In fact if anything had of happened to him during the time he tried to run while they were tied YOU would have been responsible for their vet bills as you created the situation by tying out a female in heat.

You can be angry and indignant all you want to. Crating a dog while you are away is not cruel it is the safest thing for them.

Case in point:

1.) what if someone had stolen her whole you were having fun at the pool
2.) what if another off-leash dog had instead come and KILLED her in a dog fight - all because you think a crate is cruel??!!

Funny sight. You won't be laughing when you have to pay 2000.00 for a c-section because the pups are too big for her to birth on her own. Or when she literally gets her guts compressed and can't breathe because the pups are too big. You say you don't have the money to spay her - and I heard you don't believe in a dog abortion - so save up that 2000.00 now for hte c-section - and hope your puppies and the mom don't die.

I'm not exaggerating, I am not kidding. They male was too big and she should have been spayed BEFORE her heat. It reduces the statisitical chance of her getting several types of cancer and it totally reduces the chance of her getting pregnant by a male of a different breed that is too big for her to whelp the puppies.

The only way to know for sure if she is pregnant is to have her x-rayed at the vet. If the pups are too big, she will not be able to deliver them on her own and will need a c-section. If she does not get a c-section, her chances of dying from complications are great.

You can take her in and get her spayed ASAP. (which should have been done a lot sooner)

Best of luck to you and your dog!

Yes,she is more than likely pregnant, yes the dog was old enough to get her pregnant.
Immature males cannot properly have sex.
I would abort the puppies, since she is a small breed & more than likely it would cause problems for her to deliver these big babies,or they could die while being born anyway.
I am totally against pit bulls of any mixture! These poor dogs are born killers & were bred to fight & attack, period!
Kids are attacked almost daily here in Corpus Christi,Texas & they are passing a law to ban pit bulls from the city.
Not the poor dog's fault! This is human immorality & stupidity.

If you spay her now, right away, it will be likely before the zygote has had a chance to multiply. At this point, it is still pretty much just an egg with a bunch of sperm swimming around it.

Please do the honorable thing and spay your rattie.

Thank you and good luck.

Call the vet and arrange to have her spayed as soon as it is safe. Dogs don't have to have the litter as long as you spay early enough.
Be responsible and spay her. If they tied, she is most likely pregnant, so please don't contribute more mutts to the world. For all you know, several males got to her and if the male is large enough, the large puppies could cause serious complications for your girl, even death.
For future reference, a female in heat is NOT safe in a yard, even if it is fenced. Males will do anything to get to a female including jump a fence, dig under a fence, and even break down a fence if they are large enough.

Hahaha that's too funny.. You think that the male and his owners are responsible for some of the vet bills?? You were the one that left your intact, in heat female unsupervised in the backyard.. You might as well leave your money laying in the middle of the road and act like people aren't going to take it...

Come on.. It's your own fault.. There isn't an intact male alive that wouldn't have taken advantage of such a great opportunity. You might as well have left her in the front yard with a sign on her butt ' please breed me, my owner cares nothing about my life and my safety '

Your fault, your vet bills.. You should spay the poor thing.. rat terrier and pit bull type thing... good luck finding homes for that mess..

63 days from the date they hooked up is when she'll have them if shes pg. if she is and has trouble be at the vets fast. it would have been good to check out whose dog it was but when the dog is in heat you ca't just leave them out inthe back yard anyhow.
