It is an effective fire suppression, counter battery device.

History proves that artillery does not wound or hurt soldiers as much as you would think. But it does force them to keep down and in cover and with to days new munitions it can be more accurate.

And my personal suggestion is the heck with all this high tech garbage, if you have an enemy and they are going to attack you nuke them. Who cares what the rest of the world thinks. You want to stop terrorism and land wars. Start with a nuke and let the world decide if they want you to use the rest of your arsenal on them. Hey America has 6000 nukes, perhaps its time we remind the world why we should be left the heck alone.

Sorry but this silly BS of fighting a war against people who don't even give a dang about themselves much less those trying to bring them freedom does not impress me much.

A few thoughts on the subject:

You can't win hearts and minds with artillery.

Artillery is great for ammunition vendors (never before in the history of human conflict has so much been spent by so many to kill so few...)

The US relies far too much on it - a tendency that started in WWII.

Used properly it is an important weapon in conventional warfare, particularly when on the defensive.

No matter how many guns support an attack it still requires the infantry to go in, winkle out the enemy, take and hold the ground.

The most important aspect of artillery use is having enough ammunition - closely followed by having observers in the right places - and in communication.

It's cheaper than an airstrike and the response time can be quicker too since the artillery could already be in place to respond. For instance a battery grid could be made to where the HIMARS systems could be spread 140km or about 90 miles apart, just waiting for somebody to call in a strike. With laser guided shells, the accuracy will keep on improving.

Nice to have on hand when uninvited company stops by for late night snacks. Nasty stuff to find yourself in the middle of someone's fire mission or on the receiving end of the bad boys tubes.

Used both land based and naval gunfire in my time as a Marine, 105, 155 are both devistating HE rounds with VT fuses or impact. The mother of all mothers is the naval tubes, they seem to be able to put a round inside a dirty sock from a good distance away.

If the Infantry is the Queen of battle, Artillery is the King. It puts the balls where the Queen wants them.

Napoleon once said "The only thing preferable to artillery are thunderbolts".

Being a Marine veteran, I believe in superior firepower.

I think it is a very usefull and effective tool.

because if needs arise, artillery can suppress enemy movements, and for todays artillery, they can be loaded with smart shells which are the same as smart bombs and you can blow up a specific building without needing to blow up the whole city.

Useful
Response time is quicker
Second strike in under a minute, aircraft might be hours if they have to RTB to reload.
