One of my kids left the freezer door not shut all the way. Some meat defrosted a little but was still cold and was partially frozen. If it smells ok is it safe to eat?

It's probably safe but what I would do is try to use as much of it as you can. If you have thawed hamburger, make chili and then refreeze the finished chili. Or make meatloaf for dinner tomorrow night. The meat that was defrosted a little would be okay to refreeze. You always run a higher risk of freezer burn when you do this. Use as much of it as you can. Get to cooking tomorrow.

The meat is still safe to eat, but the bigger concern is the re-freezing.
Refreezing meat causes it to break down and give it an off taste and texture.

Is it a small enough amount that you can cook it all up?

Once when the kids were small they left the freezer door open for about 2 days.. the meats were still good, but I ended up having a huge bbq because it was all thawed. Boy was I PO'd that day.

If it is a fairly modern refrigerator, with electronic controls, a trick is to plug the plug for a few minutes, then plug it back in. There isn't really anything wrong. but the refrigerator has cycles of its own which are now screwed up. Also, it probably runs only as long as it can before the comprressor heats up and numerous cycles may be needed to get the fridge temperature back down . It is normal for the freezer to take a day. A household refrigerator is nothing like flash-freezing. You can also have trouble with the heating cycle of the defroster. I would unplug it plug it back and leave it alone.

Cook it today. If its too much to eat, freeze the cooked food. You can always reheat it for a weekday dinner.

I would cook it immediately, the same day. It'll be fine. How long was it left open??

Cook it really well, and soon, and it should be fine. Don't let it go too long, and if it's seafood, toss it.
