If the crack is growing, you need to get it replaced as soon as you can. On the modern cars, the windshield is part of the overall structural integrity of the vehicle. A growing crack will weaken the rollover strength as well as the protection from road debris.

Yes you're nuts. And so is any state government that REQUIRES you to fix it.
Every windshield in the state of Alaska is cracked, often clear across. (There are a lot of gravel roads, and they put gravel on the roads in winter instead of salt...less corrosion that way) You can drive that way for YEARS and it'll hold together. Even with a network of cracks cris-crossing the windshield.
Windshields are made of multiple layers, with plastic in between that crack does not go through both layers. As long as it doesn't have any spots where it's been shattered, a large number of breaks in one spot, particularly ones going through both sides of the windshield, you don't have anything to worry about.
And I'm guessing you're imagining the cracking sound. If you're hearing it expand you'd be seeing it expand.

Yes. First, the windshield is designed to be bigger than the hole in the frame of the car. This ensures that the WHOLE windshield can't fall in. Second, the glass used for car windows is designed to shatter, but stay in place when it breaks. This means that if you are hit by a rock or a baseball or something, you don't need to worry about flying slivers of sharp glass.

Cracked windshields do not offer the same level of security and protection as undamaged or repaired windshields.
Cracked windshields, after approximately four months of exposure to the elements, no longer function safely.

No, it is not silly!!
I'm not exactly sure if it can break apart and fly into the car, but I wouldn't take a chance. I have replaced a windshield twice, so I understand your concern. Depending on where you live, you can get a ticket for a broken windshield.
My advice is to get out the yellow pages and shop around for the best price in getting it replaced.

had the same thing happen a few winters ago. loaned out my car to a friend......yes you know the ending to that long story. the chip became the biggest crack i ever saw.....it was the lenght of the window. and yes, you hear it crackling it is the force of the wind hitting your windshild at high speeds. you need to take it in and get it fixed. yes, you wont be with your car for a few days but your life is worth it. it took me like a month or two to get mine fixed becouse i am hard headed. just go and do it. you will find the piece of mind is worth anything you will pay to get it fixed. in fact the glass man can probley fix it at your own home.

the shield is a laminate of plastic and glass and won't break as a standard piece of window glass.
It would take a lot more than the force of the air while driving to even begin to get it to flex and even then it would not come out of it's mounting.
Check with your insurance [or state Dept. of Insurance] as most states require the insurers to replace broken windshields at no cost or penalty to the insured.

Of course not! When you are consious of the fact that you are in danger, you WILL be nervous. You're only human. Did you know that human beings are DESIGNED to be afraid of a bee's buzz? Get it checked out, by a friend, or a mechanic if you have the money.

they re made to withstand some serious ****, in the movies they crack right away but really they dent inwards where they were hit but don't crash right through
i hit a windshield once with a bat( an old junker car) and it made a sort of spider web shape around where i hit but didn't fall through
