HI
There are a few reasons for a dog self mutilating.
1. Fleas or flea allergy (for flea allergic dogs it just takes one bite and they chew themselve red raw)
2. Atopy - allergies to mites, dust and other plant matter
3. Food allergy
4. Secondary staph or bacterial infection
5. Mites such as demodex or sarcopties
6. Obsessive complusive behavour but thats usually localised to one or two areas of body such as feet or leg
There are dieases that cause hair loss as well as
Hypothyroidism
Cushings disease - hyperadrenocorticism
Best to take your dog to a vet and they will be able to do a skin scraping to rule out fleas / mites / bacteria / staph.
Most likely will need flea control such as Revolution that does fleas and mites, antibiotics and antihistamine + steroid.
Good luck

You need to take her to the vet.She probably has allergies or fleas,or she could have mange or a yeast infection..A dog that constantly chews and digs at it's skin can develop a severe bacterial infection called a pyoderma;the skin gets pus and crusty scabs on it.It's smelly and itchy and it HURTS! Dogs feel pain, just like we do.Your dog is suffering and she could even die if her skin gets infected and isn't treated. Please try to get her to a vet.
Edit: Also,if you live in the U.S.,the yes,you can give Benadryl,1 mg.per lb.of body weight. But,if you live in the UK,you cannot give Benadryl,as the ingredients are different. You can give Piriton, but I'm not sure of the dosage,so you should take the dog to the vet.

Sounds like allergies, only a vet can determine the type and treat her accordingly. Don`t resort to OTC products, as they can make her condition worse and don`t apply people ointments as the dog can lick at it and that also could do more harm. Take her to a vet and let him diagnose the problem as she must be very uncomfortable, as it is she should have been seen by a vet sooner.

def. wanna get to a vet, but in the mean time you can give her a benadryl. if shes a little dog (30lbs or less) start with 1/2 a tablet other wise if shes bigger a whole 25mg is fine, and u can do this every 8 or so hours depending. The dosage for benadryl with animals is one millagram per pound so you dont wanna exceed that

She probably has allergies. The usual suspects are wheat and corn. If you are buying your food from the grocery store, those brands are loaded with the wheat and corn fillers. Soy is also a big allergy culprit. My parents dog was going through the same thing and their vet said that he was allergic to corn (after allergy tests). Also, we used to have a Rott that had allergies and we gave him benadryl (my parents vet said they could do that too).

Our dog had a flea allergy, she almost drove us crazy we felt so bad for her. She was miserable and chewing herself raw. We found a product called Linatone. It is an oil you add to their food. Dogs usually like it. You can find it at the big pet stores. It changed our lives...in like 2 days. gl

Maybe take her to the vet!!! She might have fleas. You could get some dog hydrocortiszone and put it on her to stop the itching. Or call the animals hotline, look it up for your area on googles or whatever.
