Stupid vs significant are all based on perception. People who said the earth was spherical were called stupid at one point. People who said the sun and not the earth (including the great Galileo)was the center of the universe were stupid. I think the mass suicides are a great tragedy and do not understand why these people killed themselves...I don't think the word stupid fits...it was much more complex. The way in which people pray and what or whom they choose to pray to is a very personal thing. It is wrong to suggest what they do is stupid; just as it would be wrong to say your question is "stupid," when in fact you have concerns that are valid to you.

You may say, "*I* think that is stupid whenever you wish. Declaring that something is universally stupid is something else.
Before you do this you'd have to ask the person praying to a cross or a tree why they are doing it. I have read about people who perform rituals that involve trees. And just because someone is praying in front of a cross doesn't mean they are praying *to* the cross (as in "dear holy cross made of maple please help me"). In finding out more about the activity you may find that while you may not find it valid personally, it is perfectly reasonable for those people to be performing rituals involving crosses or plants.
The fact that you find an idea stupid doesn't mean that it is, only that YOU have decided that it has no worth or value for you.
And frankly I think the Heaven's Gate suicides are a far cry from someone praying to a plant. I don't think that anyone would say that a faith that advocates suicide is a good idea.

Just because a lot of people believe something doesn't make it right...or "not stupid" for that matter.
I think a lot of things are stupid, but I keep it to myself and remain respectful (you know what they say...if you can't say anything nice...). What works for me isn't the same as what works for someone else. If praying to a cross keeps them from becoming mass murderers (or committing mass suicide), then more power to them....but unfortunately it doesn't always work out that way.

No one believes in praying to a plant so how would that be disrespectful? ON the other hand many believe in praying to the Christ on the cross....see the difference?

As a Christian (and a fundie at that), I think that you have the God given right to say that religious stuff is stupid in your view. After all, God says "The fool has said in his heart 'There is no God'. " so He's given His opinion on some people, why shouldn't you be able to give yours?

If you believe any idea--religious or otherwise--is stupid, you have the right to say so.

PLEASE Read your bible.
1 John 4:1 - Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
His sheep know his voice.
