well originally the monks and sisters and everyone religious would say the Poter Noster (or something like that-latin is not my language) that means our father
they would say 150 of them in 3 sets of 50.
well the blessed virgin apeared to some saint (i for get who- maybe st. domonic) and gave him the rosary and told him how to pray it.
hoped this helped. i learned it last year in religion class
EDIT: and the person who is right under wwjdtu is wrong about 150 hail mary's in one complete rosary.
It used to be 150 but Pope JOhn Paul II added another seto of mysteries (a set is 50 hail mary's) now there are 200. The Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and thanks to JP2, the Luminous

guess what, you don't have the correct answer yet.
However, a ten minute google search on my part didn't raise enough information to entirely answer your question. The legend is that it was given by Mary to St. Dominic in the 1200's, but the form of it imitates the recitation of all 150 psalms (150 Hail Mary's in an entire rosary).
Prayer beads are ancient... older than the rosary. Mary certainly promoted the recitation of the rosary in later apparitions. Try a search on "St. Dominic and the Holy Rosary" and see if you can find the legend or further history of the prayer. Of course the words come from the Bible from the Annunciation, the last part added by the church later on.
This turned out to be a fairly complicated answer to a valid question. Star question for you.

Tradition tells us that back when the Albigensian heresy was devastating the country of Toulouse, St. Dominic besought the help of the Virgin Mary and was instructed by her to teach and encourage the Rosary among the people as an antidote to heresy and sin.
The Rosary consists of meditation on the life of Christ. 90% of the Rosary comes straight from the Bible. While meditating on "mysteries" or occurances in the life of Christ, the faithful recite a specific number of Our Father's and Hail Mary's and use the Rosary beads to keep count.
Prayer beads of all types are found in many world religions and are an ancient tradition. However, the Rosary is a special and powerful prayer given to the faithful by the Queen of Heaven herself and has shown itself to be a powerful and efficacious prayer, pleasing to God.
There is a very thorough history here:
