I am moving to NY with a salary of 55k. Ideally, I would like to stay on the island of Manhattan. I'm used to small spaces, have lived in nyc years ago but with a roomate- which, I am way too old for now! I'm really just looking for an area that's safe and not too far away from transportation.

It's going to be tough to make it in Manhattan for any less than 1.5k for a studio.

Also the majority of landlords will require you to make at least 40x the rent which means @ 1.5k, your annual salary needs to be 60k.

Try the outer boroughs like Brooklyn and Queens. Astoria is a decent area and close to the city. Easily accessible via subway (N) and really doesn't take any more time to reach midtown than UES. I have a few friends that live there and they love it. You can also get much more room for the same amount of money.

You might find a tiny, closet size studio in Chelsea or the Flatiron district for $1500 a month.

In Williamsburg right by the Williamsburg bridge, they have lofts for artists and also it is right across from Manhattan.
