since ancestry and myfamily have managed to close almost all internet databases to free searching, you are pretty much limited to what is available on familysearch.org:

and cyndi's list:
http://www.cyndislist.com/births.htm
Hopefully one of these or some other group not subvertable by the ancentry/myfamily moneygrubbers will make more vital records available in the future.

Birth Records are city and county records and they charge nominal fees for copying and the people that do the work.

No, they are not free, but you can order them online. I just got mine so I could get my passport. The cost was $17. They are available from the County Clerks office from your state and county.
