In a real sense He was. John 1:1 - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." The Greek translates more directly, "In the ancient time was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word." Then, John 1:14 - "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."
