Probably nothing, just wanton disrespect of other people- which isn't always a religious thing. It's also important to note that the Egyptians themselves defaced many of their own monuments. Got a new Pharaoh? You have to change the faces of some of the monuments to reflect that. Didn't like having a female ruler? Why not destroy her monuments?

Nobody likes Competition. Just like the Taliban blowing up one of the oldest Buddha statues. Just like the Christians destroying(by force) tons of different religions and sects in medieval Europe. Just like some Muslim countries would execute someone for offending the prophet terrorist.

The ancient Egyptians defaced many of their own monuments. Their religion was one of worshiping many gods. They had a pharoah who believed in only one god and tried to spread that belief during his lifetime. He was closer to the truth!. When he died they tried to wipe out all evidence of his life and beliefs, defacing many 'monuments'

because they wanted their "religion" to flourish, they also might have done it for money since the church and state were tied pretty much. Infact xtianity, islam and judaism are indeed the real false religions, they make no sense when you think with an open mind. read this book "The god delusion" by richard dawkins and you will see what i mean
