Illegal immigration is caused by hopelessness in the country you are running from. Say you can't get a job in mexico. Then you go across the border and get five dollars an hour for a job that most people would expect more for. Illegals are not making 75,000 a year at Microsoft or Goggle or any other company. Not all immigrants are illegal. There are people here making 75,000 that are from other countries. But they are not illegal. Making that kind of money you can afford a lawyer who can make the immigration process a whole lot easier. Of course you would do it. making that kind of money you would be an idiot not to start the legal immigrant process. The illegals are usually the ones that get little money and live on cash.

I know what the guy is refering. In trade, the US is the proverbial 1000 pound gorilla. When US makes deals with other countries they tend to bully the other country to get what it wants. What happen was that some of these developing countries decided to pull together so they can collectively bargain with the US. Bolivia alone would be left out in the cold, but when United with South AMerica, it could negotiate a better deal. What the guy is saying is that US is creating a new Free trade agreement to prevent these groups from taking hold. THe problem in this world is that there is only one super power, and according to CHinese Taoism and greek Didatic, you need two power to play against each other to create a balance. The best thing for the developing nation, is China has become sort of an alternative. The bad thing is that CHina is somewhat locked in to the US economy, and some economist consider CHina and US economically attached. THey refer the two country as a dual engine. Free trade is about preventing competition. It only favors the big companies getting bigger. It wont force companies like Tata in India or Cemex to compete fairly in the world market. THey would still get their protective stance in their home country, but we will allow them to buy up our corporation. This type of mentality is what is driving the growing gap between the rich and the poor.
People seem to equate being poor as being sad. My I-pod does not make me happy. My watch does not make me happy. My Guess jeans does not do anything but cover my body. What makes people sad is seeing what other people have and not having the same thing. What I feel is that having enough food, having access to a reasonable health care and a certain amount of access to hygeine related utilites is what is needed. As a people, are we happier than others because we have more stuff. A person once describe Chile to me. It's a place that might not have as much as we do, but a place where you can drink a coffee and relax. I would think that is a better place then the back stabbing dod eat dog life style we have. Peopel say how great AMerica is, but you know, we work 40 hours, and have the least number of days off. Some of us are working several jobs to keep up. We seem to have money but not the time to enjoy it. As for small business, People try to scare me with the word recession, but my belief is that we need to look at what we want of our society. I want a society that people can move up the economic ladder. I keep seeing small business die, and I don't want our country to have a caste system.
Gee, I'm chatty this week.
Edit: FIrst Tinman, next Dorothy, A tiny little puppy shows up, and now I see a Wicked Witch here and now. Where am I, definetely not in Kansas.
Oh great, does this make me the Scarecrow, at least I'm not some flying Monkey.

The problem that causes outsourcing isn't free trade. Its the fact that we have government-managed trade (NAFTA and WTO) that interferes with our tax system, as well as all the regulations we don't need.
Illegal immigration is caused by poor living standards in other countries (if Mexico wasn't such a dump, why would Mexicans cross the border, considering how dangerous it is to do so and they have a risk of getting deported?) and by government subsidies (Illegal Immigrants get free education for their children and other welfare and there is also birthright citizenship). If you subsidize something, you get more of it, as basic economic theory proves.
I think we need an overhaul of our legal immigration, so that the most talented people are able to always immigrate to our country, as are family members of American citizens. I would support an increase in the amount of legal immigration, but we definitely need to stop illegal immigration.

No is just that some ugly fat racist always thinks that people should not migrate to America.
You ask why is the white man loosing his Jobs.
When the white man killed the American Indians and stole their land did he think of the long term consequences?
There might not be a god in this world but there as hell is a saying.
"What goes around comes around"
Always has and Always will be.
Stop crying about racism and immigrants.
Americans today don't care about Ploitics the white women running after the Black man for his 12 inch penis.
Japan makes Toyota which is the number one seller in the world.
Americans live in a box and think they are the greatest, but Japan owns the Technological world.
You can't break the spirit of the samurai he is too dedicated and will not stop until he has perfected his goal to the fullest.
one word "SONY"

Whether I agree with the quote or not is moot when it comes to aiding and abeting illegal aliens.
When the homeless of America, comprised mainly of mentally ill people, whose public mental health care facility is reduced to dispensing pills, because the funding for actual therapy has dried up, then come back and talk about the causes for the poor to jump the border for a better life.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel a lot of your posts are trying to justify the reasons for people to jump our border's. I feel being poor, but having your mental health intact is far better, than being poor and mentally ill.
I'm not talking off the top of my head here. I do volunteer work and you should see some of the people, who come in off the streets. They come in wearing their entire ward robe, smelling of urine and feces, and have a look of such hopelessness and desperation it crushes your heart. I've had to take breaks from volunteering in this area, because it's so depressing. Though we don't check for ID's, they are all mostly white or black and when they do talk about themselves, you learn a lot of them are Veterens, for pete's sake!

I read your article. It continues to consider the US as a monolith where FTAs are 'good for the US', but other than that, I'd have to agree with all except its free trade with other developing nations issue. I think power corrupts, and free trade agreements corrupt absolutely, given what history has shown us.

Cheap labor and messed up trade agreements are caused by ALL governments involved. Illegals themselves are the cause of the illegal immigration problem.

It started in 1492.
It is surprising to many to learn that a very large percentage of illegals in the U.S. are from Ireland. I don't know why, perhaps the government is not telling the truth on that one.
Of course the number one cause of illegal "immigration"* is immigration laws.
*"Illegal Immigration" always sounds like a contradiction in terms to me. "Undocumented immigrants" is even worse. Too much PC and not calling things what they actually are. Call them simply "Illegals". Nicer than "wettback" and more truthful than "immigrant".

No, it's caused by
(a) The actions of the Mexican government in actively encouraging it and
(b) Our own government refusing to enforce our own laws, or build the fence authorised last year by Congress.
