The did both. They had small group meetings in homes, and they also met in larger groups (or congregations) in places like churches or in other places.

BTW, there are still churches (like mine) that still do that today.

The beginning of houses of worship go back to first century. As the population of Christians grew the need for places of worship increased. And as they built building they still met in small groups in homes for bible training.

There were some churches but mostly they met in houses. Some areas were more tolerant than others as were times and Roman Emperors.

There is a term "the church that meets at>>>>'s house" See church meant (an assembly or congregation of believers.) I think I read that in one of Pauls letters.
