When certain words are said or certain noises are made dogs turn their heads to the side as if they're confused. Why?

For the same reason that most people, if you watch, tilt thier heads slightly to one side or the other when listening to a speech or whatever. They are subconsiously processing what they are hearing and storing it. It is a sign of active listening. Most people tilt their heads slightly right as if to activate or utilize more of thier logical half of the brain.

None of these answers have a scientific approach. There has to be a reason the heads tilt when they hear an unfamiliar noise one that has a use in nature. Someone mentioned honing in on the sound. Perhaps tilting the head allows the to judge something that it doesn't when the ears are level?

When a dog tilts its head it doesn't mean anything is wrong with the dog. If you make a funny noise your dog will tilt its head. Dogs are very close to doing things that we do.

My dogs listen to me talk to them, and I don't care who says I am crazy to say this. Sometimes, I will look over and catch my older male dog staring at me with a thoughtful expression, and I'll say "Sid, do you love mom?" He will always jump up and give me a kiss. My younger male dog tilts his to and fro when I talk to him, escpecially when he's in trouble. It's so cute, I can't be mad at him. I know, at some level, we can communicate with dogs--dogs are not stupid animals.

They recognise tone, sound and are calculating where it came from and what it is--zoneing in on it.

...it's exactly what it looks like. They are confused.

If I laugh at my dog because he looks silly, he can tell, and he looks resentful. It's so fascinating. They are smart.

I don't actually know why they do this, but when mine does, I always think he looks perplexed. It's really cute, too!
