Gas and auto companies have been against it for a long time. Gas companies, because it represents the end of their legacy monopoly on vehicle fuel, and investing in new technology is very expensive. That's why there haven't been any new refineries built in decades.
Not that they aren't floating in money already.
Car companies because it costs them money to redesign and build engines that run on it. They say that it damages your engine, but that's just an excuse. Also, it's a stepping stone to pure alcohol engines, biodiesel and other green energy alternatives. They have a "gentleman's agreement" with the oil companies - car companies build engines that run on petroleum products as long as oil companies make fuels for cars that run on them.
It's a self-reinforcing cycle.

No companies I know about are against E-85. But lots of people might be against the government paying for it. I might be against that myself. Depending on how much they pay and who gets the money.
