They are never fun, but if they're done properly the pain should be minimal.

They usually numb it pretty good. If the root canal is very deep, then you can get a bad twinge. I've had several. Worst part is the noise really. Painwise, it isn't that much worse than a regular filling unless they have to go deep in the root to get some of the tissue. What you do is make a deal with your dentist. Tell them you are going to raise your hand if it hurts bad and they should stop. But even worst case and it does twinge bad, as soon as they stop what they are doing, the pain is over that quick. So while it isn't exactly great fun, it is something that you can get through without horrible agony. You might want to ask for a 'bite block' which is basically a rubber thing you bite on to help hold your mouth open. Helps if the root canal takes a really long time. Anyway, you have my sympathy, but you will be fine!

Well I am going to be honest with you. I had two root canals a month ago. First they do try to and usually suceed in numbing the whole area so you in all probability you will not feel a thing and afterward advil will usually do the trick for any pain or swelling . You will be a bit sore for a few days.
One tooth was as easy as pie. No pain during only a slight ache the first two days after.
HOWEVER, and this was not only mine but my bf personal experiance which coincidently we went through the same time. For one of my teeth and his the doctor had to use lots of extra stuff to numb us as the teeth were in bad shape. Now these teeth hurt like the dickens for 3-4 weeks afterward and advil as well as vicoden just took the edge off in the first two weeks.
I was very surprised that I had one root canal with no pain and the other was painful for a month but the fact is the teeth that cause you pain pre root canal will cause you the most pain after. It is also harder for them to numb you for these teeth as there is lots of inflammation.
Just be honest and tell them if you feel pain during the procedure and call them afterward if your pain meds don't help so they can give you advice.
It is worth it if you need it. You don't want to lose a tooth at 14!

I had a root canal and it didn't hurt at all. The dentist numbed the tooth before he started working, and by the time I got home and the numbness wore off, it was actually a relief, because the nerves (or whatever it was) were dead.
Best of luck!

You won't feel any pain when you get your root canal.
Pain is different for different people. Some people feel some discomfort afterward, but others feel no pain after it's all done.
