It's by my favorite contemporary writer, David Foster Wallace. Check it out:

"There is no such thing as not worshiping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship -- be it JC or Allah, bet it YHWH or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or the Four Noble Truths, or some inviolable set of ethical principles -- is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough."

What are your thoughts on his thoughts?

I think he is absolutely right. Some will say they don't worship anything, because they are atheist, for example. In that case, they are wrong, because they worship atheism and they argue their belief in atheism as strongly as religious people argue their belief in religion.

For those who worship money or fame or riches, look at Princess Diana. She had everything, yet she had nothing. None of it made her happy. It was never enough. Even the Bible says if you worship riches, it will never be enough.

First thought - the concept of worship will make some people gloss over the point, and not understand the question. SLOW DOWN people, read it again - it's an interesting idea.

Second thought - what I think it means is that we all have an idea or a principle that we hold so dear that we can only 'practice' we can never attain. We may for the most part be comfortable practicing, but there are times in our lives that we are greedy, and we want to perfectly exemplify our ideals - which we can never do.

Actually we do have things in our life we "worship" whether we realize it or not. Be it money....which is quite seductive, sex which is as addictive as drugs......what ever you put before or between you and God is worshiped as God because it is the desire of your heart above all. (Example when Moses went to get the ten commandments and comes down off the mountain and the people are dancing, and carrying on around the golden calf).....Until you come to the knowledge yourself that there is a higher being you are a superficial individual. There is a maturity and growth on the path to truth and enlightenment. When you have the feeling you never have enough it is because you have not drank from the well that never runs dry, and only God can provide that.

Worship in a sort of context but then it seems odd, as if I am worshipping myself.
You see I may fit into the catergory of ethics and pricipals, yet I don't worship them I uphold them as best I can. Without someone to uphold ethics then there are no ethics. (same goes with religion as far as I am concerned)

Everyone defines the word "worship" differently. But according to my definition of the word, I don't worship anything.

True. But if forgot one thing. Some people who don't worship anything -- like how atheists claim to be -- worship themselves. They worship their own beliefs, their own arguments, their own "philosophy." They don't believe God exists, but they really just choose to deny His existence. They can't completely disprove it anyway.

Everyone has some form of worship in their lives; the ones who say that they don't usually worship themselves, their own intellect, etc although not necessarily literally .

To me it's incorrect. I can't think of a thing that I worship. I don't even have superficial idols. It's just not in me.
