There are lots of possible reasons, but generally the cat is acting out because she's upset about something. Is her litter box cleaned out and given fresh litter regularly -- like every day? Is the litter box accessible? Are you paying attention to the cat, and giving her food and fresh water regularly? This cat is upset about something. It would be cruel to get rid of the cat because of something that is going on. Something's changed, and your cat doesn't like it. Figure it out and fix it.
Edit: JNC is correct, your cat could be ill. Take her to the vet.

Any time a cat starts peeing in unusual places..refusing to use the litter box the best thing to do first is to take it to the vet and rule out any medical problems. some cats are very prone to urinary tract infections.
next...dint use bleach or any ammonia based products to clean the spots the cat has peed...these products have a urine type scent and encourage the cat to pee in the same spot.
Ive had previous problems with my cat that were not health related peeing in closets or in shoes. These were solved by...locking him out of the offending rooms.. the rooms were then cleaned with vinegar and water and then a lemon scented soap. also the cat no longer has access to those areas.
Make sure the litter box is clean...sometimes just changing the litter isn't good enough you should wash out the litter box as well. either rinse it well or use soap and water.
Vinegar works well on fabric. i haven't found it to take color of the fabric and it does deter the cat from using that same spot.
You could also try placing a plastic bag over the places that the cat is peeing...its not a pleasant surface to the cat and they will look elsewhere for somewhere to pee.
Don't punish the cat and put it in the litter box...they will start associating the litter box with bad things and be less likely to use it.

The very first thing you should do is take your kitty to the vet. Many times cats pee in conspicous places when they have a bladder infection. your vet will take a urine sample & test for crystals. Next go to an animal supply store & get a product called natures miracle. it is an enzyme that will remove all smell of urine to your cat. If this is a marking problem which is unusual for a female the scent will be gone. spot test first for colorfastness.
Cats usually do not "just start" peeing inappropriately for no reason. Think about what has changed in your house for the cat. Have you moved the litter box, changed litters, have a new person or pet in the house? If this is not a physical issue what is emotionally upsetting your cat enough to cause this behavior. What's different? If you have multiple cats has one of them started to pick on her? do they chase her from the litterbox or not allow her in? Is the litterbox covered? Some cats don;t like that. some cats don;t like solid colored boxes. they like a large clear storage bin so they have visiblity during the whole time they are in the box. Cats feel very vulnerable when using the box just as you feel very vulnerable when on the toilet!
If all avenues are exhausted & it is not physical & ABSOLUTELY nothing is different you may have to go back & re-train. The best way to do this is to keep the cat in a small space with a litterbox & food for a few days...perhaps a large dog crate or even a small bathroom. Gradually give her more space, graduate from the crate to a bathroom, to a bedroom, to another part of the house. . A cat will not soil outside the box when in the smallest of spaces & you have to gradually increase the space it perceives as its "territory." It may seem cruel to keep your cat in a small space & yes, it is inconvenient for a bit but it is nothing compared to losing your cat altogether...your cat wants to keep her home.
I hope this helped. It is a very, very complicated problem & difficult issue. ABSOLUTELY start with your vet.

Sounds like she may have a health issue such as a urinary tract infection. My calico started peeing in my bathroom sink and I didn;t know why. Eventually I saw blood in the urine and immediately took her to the vet. She had a UTI and it was due to an imbalance in the pH in her food because I had changed her diet. You should examine the urine well to make sure there is no blood in it. I also had a cat once that would not quit peeing on my laundry if it was piled up in the floor. The vet told me she had a behavioral problem and couldn't be halped. I couldn't leave laundry on the floor anymore until she became an outside kitty!
So it could be a couple things. Keep an eye on her and make sure she is going without any pain and there is no blood or just trickling. If she is having a hard time going and only a little comes out, she has a problem. Good luck!

She may have a bladder infection,or her litterbox is bugging her ( too dirty, different litter, who knows?) You should take a urine sample to the vet to be checked. If there's nothing wrong, confine the cat to a room,( or even a large dog cage)with a litterbox, and have the couch professionally cleaned to completely remove the smell of urine.Leave the cat confined for 3 weeks, letting her out, supervised, for a few hours each day. This will re-train her brain to use the litterbox. After three weeks, you can leave her out,but put her in the room with the litterbox several times a day to "remind" her.You can even keep her confined at night and when you're not at home,to make sure there are no accidents. This is far better than "getting rid" of her.

If she only just recently starting doing it, there must be a reason why. I would first be concerned that she has a health problem. If not, did something change recently to stress her out (new baby, new home, new pets, etc.)? Is the litter box cleaned daily? Cats strongly dislike using a dirty litter box and will go other places in order to avoid it. Unfortunately, once cats pee in a certain spot, they tend to keep peeing there because their scent remains. There are a number of sprays to use to remove the smell but different sprays work better for different people. Nature's Miracle seems to work fairly well for most people so I would give that a try.

It's been my experience that when a cat starts peeing somewhere she is not supposed to, she is unhappy about something and is making a statement - or she is ill, maybe a bladder infection.
Are you keeping her normal potty place very clean? If it is a litter box situation, you know you have to clean it out every day and then change the litter every two weeks to keep your kitty happy.
I had a cat once who peed on my stuff whenever I went out of town, that was her way of telling me she did not like me to go out of town and leave her. I have also had cats who peed or worse because they were unhappy in their situation - too many dogs, too much noise, etc.
The last option is to have your vet give her a check up and make sure she does not have a bladder infection.
Keep her out of the room where the couch is until you can figure out what is causing this and try to change it.

have you made changes to the litter or food recently as others have suggested check for a uti but in the meantime spay the area with vinegar may have to due this several times cats hate it consider for the time being double sided sticky tape as long as it wont ruin your couch again if it dosent ruin your couch bleach is the only thing that will get rid of a cats scent
almost forgot is it peeing or spraying theres a difference spraying is marking its territory spraying is done standing peeing is sitting

she is marking her spot, did another animal come into the house, or did you sit in that spot and you smelled like another dog or something?
Or she is sick. Don't get rid of her, buy a spray first taht takes out pet odor, see if that changes her mind about that spot. Then take her for a check up. Cats have pee problems all the time that are a sign of sickness, and people give them up without knowing they are sick. Take care of your kitty!
good luck

First take your cat to the vet and rule out that this is not a urinary infection rather than a behavioral problem. Then make sure that your catbox is clean all the time. Don't talk about getting rid of your cat until you take her to the vet first!!!
