FRANZ CHARLET (Belgian 1862-1928)
Painter, etcher and lithographer of portraits, genre and landscapes, Charlet studied at the Brussels Academy and the Ecole Des Beaux Artes in Paris. One of the leading proponents of Impressionism and eventually Luminism, Charlet was central to the development of Belgian early 20th century art. A friend of Whistler and other leading European artists, he founded “The Twenty” (a group of Belgian avante garde painters) and the International Society of Watercolorists. He spent his later life painting in Paris, and has work in many major collections, including the Museums of Antwerp, Brussels, Gent, etc. Charlet was one of the most important Impressionist painters in the new Belgian school and one of the founders of a group known as "The Ten." He studied at the L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Gerome, Duran, and Lefebvre.
You don't say what your piece is.. an oil, a print, a watercolor? As he is so well documented, you could probably just bring it into a fine local art gallery and they will most likely be able to help you with the writing on the piece. I hope that this helps!
