Hi ocho. How much are you prepared to spend.? Hi Fi. Stereo sound starts at about $2,000 up to $200,000 and beyond. If you mainly want music for a party then why do you need a great music system? .Nobody will take much notice of the music at a party. All they like is plenty of loud noise. High Fidelity sound reproduction and TVs dont really go together. If you just want an average system that you can use with a TV then any Receiver with a couple of speakers will do.If you want something to be proud of for serious listening then i need to ask a few questions...
What source component will you mainly use.?.....CD Player,Tuner, Tape,Satellite,Turntable etc.

Do you want large floorstanding speakers or do you prefer bookshelf size ? All speakers add their own "sound" to the sound they are reproducing. There are bright sounding speakers that emphasise the treble. There are speakers that emphasise the mid-range ( for example, voices are projected in front of the speakers) There are speakers that have a deeper bass sound.and there are speakers that have a fairly neutral sound, meaning they do not emphasise any of the frequency range of that speaker. These speakers are the best for reproducing all types of music but they are usually more expensive than the others.

The best amplifiers for music are ones that have a separate Preamplifier and Power Amplifier. The next best amplifier is an Integrated Amplifier containing a Preamp. and Power Amp. in the one component. The worst amplifier for music is a Receiver (sorry if anyone owns a Receiver, but it's true) because the single power supply must power the Preamp. section, the Tuner section, and the Power Amp.section.The needs of the Power Amp. section effect the Preamp. section which deteriorates the sound.

If you could add a few details that would be great.

I dont know what you mean by a good system but if you are talking about a good system like the ones I like? Then here are two options. Get a reciever, You can go with a good strong stereo reviever like an Onkyo 8522 and two tower speakers like the Klipsch RF-602 and a decent Subwoofer (venodyne, Klipsch). You have multiple inputs so you can plug whatever you want into it. ipod, dvd player, cd changer. The other option would be to get a home theater reciever and surround speakers. (same idea) This can get a bit pricier as my last suggestion will be a little over a grand. More speakers = more money. But dont worry, they sell great suround sound systems already put together. CHeck out the onkyo sks ht540 or the sks ht420. (7.1 channel and 6.1) Costs around $499 and they make great stereo systems. They have multiple inputs, you can use it as a home theater system and you will never hear music played better than this.

I break the different audio companies into lo-fi, mid-fi ...and true hi-fi which according to your question is what you are looking for. I highly recommend buying used stuff, but you have to know what you are looking for and what is a good buy ...I use e-Bay mostly.

I will suggest:

power amplifier, pre-amplifer - McIntosh, Crown, Bryston, Carver or NAD

CD player - NAD or Carver

tuner (radio) - NAD or Carver

speakers - Energy, B&K, Tannoy, Klipsch, Swans Wharfedale or Boston Aucostic

sub-woofer - Energy, Paradigm, Sunfire or Venodyne

It's all in the name and I buy high-end used sound systems for under $2,000 ...and I do mean Hi-Fi.

What's your budget look like? There are so

many choices out there, I don't know where

to start. I suggest going to AudiogoN and

look for some high-end gear.
