ETA: fascinating...
QUOTE: The well documented practice in China of dwarfing both plants and animals is the basis for the theory that Chihuahuas originated there. But another theory is that they originated in Egypt and were traded into Spain and later Mexico. Chihuahuas were first taken into the United States by American visitors to Mexico.

Possibly. The Toltecs had a breed of dog they called the "Techichi," who some believe are the ancestors of the chihuahua.
Some dog folks believe that the ancestor of the chihuahua was the fennec fox of the Sudan.
Some breed historians think that the ancestor of the chihuahua was a hairless dog that came from Asia, across Russia, through the Bering Straits and into what is now Alaska.

That is not proven, it is only a theory. The Chihuahuas ancestry can only be confirmed as far as originating in Mexico. There is absolutely no proof that they originated in Egypt, which is why they are said to be from Mexico. That is the first place they were confirmed to be.

It is nearly impossible to figure out the root stock of most dogs - some claim that there are pictures of dachshund, or a very similar low slung dog, on Egyptian temple walls from 5000 years ago.
Usual belief is that dachshund were first bred in Germany around 1600.
Lots of root stock of dog and cat breeds came out of Egypt and that area - I wouldn't be surprised if chis did too.

I think I heard that too. But a lot of dogs were bred to be what they are today at a country different from the one they originated in. So, the breed may very well have been "started" in Egypt. But the common belief is that they "from" ancient Aztec.

That is an interesting thought. Here I was thinking they came from Taco Bell. I still have one of those Chihuahuas, my Nephew's baby was playing with it today. Dang, the battery still working too.
